MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – The Capital University women's team kicked off a new era under new head coach
Taylor Stanchin on Saturday morning with a 6-1 road win at Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
Stanchin, who was coaching her first career collegiate tennis match today, now boasts a 1-0 record overseeing the Comets. MVNU falls to 0-1 on the young season.
The Comets got the job done by sweeping all six singles match-ups after dropping the doubles point by a narrow margin of 2-1.
In doubles play, the duo of
Ashlyn Edwards and
Jenny Rollins picked up a win at the #3 spot, winning 6-0. Elsewhere, the Comets fell at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. In the first spot,
Annika Hansen and
Stephanie Makris fell narrowly, 7-5. In the second spot,
Addison Kokensparger and
Ella McGlynn dropped their match 6-2. MVNU led the overall score 1-0 heading to singles play.
In singles, the Comets triumphed comfortably in all six head-to-head match-ups to earn the 6-1 victory. In order of first to sixth spots,
Scarlett Stephens won 6-2, 6-0;
Stephanie Makris won 6-2, 7-5;
Annika Hansen won 6-2, 6-2;
Ella McGlynn was victorious 6-1, 6-3;
Jenny Rollins won 6-1, 6-1; and
Ashlyn Edwards triumphed 6-0, 6-0.
Capital continues their busy opening weekend of action with a 1 p.m. match against Wooster on September 7th. The match will be Capital's only home match of the fall season and will take place at Wolfe Park.
