"PRIDE OF THE PURPLE", THE CAPITAL FIGHT SONG

The Capital University fight song, "Pride of the Purple, was written by alumnus and long-time Capital professor George Dell '23. Dell came to Capital in 1919 from Middletown, Ohio, with the intention of becoming a pastor. He graduated from Capital in 1923 and entered the Seminary, but as his daughter, Pat Dell Bowman '50, wrote, "He decided after a year and two weeks, that his mission was not as a minister, but as a teacher." He earned a master's degree and began a distinguished 44-year teaching career at Capital, from 1926 through 1969. Dell also wrote the lyrics to the Capital University Alma Mater. It is unknown exactly what year the song was written and introduced as the University's fight song.

Following a victory - home, away or on neutral ground - the victorious Capital team will face its supporters in the stands and vibrantly sing the fight song! Fans are inviting to sing along with the team to relish in the V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!

PRIDE OF THE PURPLE LYRICS
Pride of the Purple,
Men of Capital we join to cheer you.
Fight hard nor fear you,
Battle for your banner bright.
The purple royal,
Trusts in her champions loyal.
Then go fight, fight, fight,
Fight for the White
And Purple of Capital.

C-A-P! C-A-P! C-A-P-I-T-A-L!
V-I-C! V-I-C! V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!

Victory for the Purple
And the White, we're with you.
Pride of the Purple
Into conflict go, your colors flying.
Foreman defying,
Confident of skill and might.
Victors we raise you,
Vanquished we still shall praise you.
Then go fight, fight, fight,
Fight for the White,
And the Purple of Capital.

THE VICTORY BELL
Following a Capital victory, the Purple and White will group as a team and begin to pour through the stands of Bernlohr Stadium, exit through the side gate entrance and walk confidently toward the Victory Bell. Once together under the bell, each team member pulls on the rope which clangs the bell and lets all of Bexley know that Capital was victorious. If the team is competing away from campus, the team makes this tradition a priority as soon as they get off of the bus, no matter the time of day or night.

The Victory Bell original hung in the Recitation Hall until it was taken down to build a new library on that site. The bell was moved to the Campus Center in 1969 and then to The Capital Center, which was constructed in 2001. The bell is located on the southwest corner of the building at the corners of East Mound Street and Pleasant Ridge Avenue.
