WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Capital University women's tennis team saw their afternoon start outdoors with a senior day ceremony at Wolfe Park, but before the match could begin, the teams moved indoors to Otterbein's Clements Recreation Center due to inclement weather. There, the match was an exciting one that saw the match come down to the final two singles matches. Otterbein was able to secure a point at No. 4 singles to secure the win, 5-2.
With the result, Capital falls to 6-13 overall and 1-2 in the OAC, while Otterbein moves to 4-8 and 2-1 in the conference.
DOUBLES
The all-important doubles point went the way of the Cardinals as they won No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
In the top doubles spot,
Scarlett Stephens and
Stephanie Makris paired up to defeat Niya Bell and Taryn Simmers by a 6-3 score.
In second doubles,
Annika Hansen and
Jenny Rollins were defeated 6-3 by Breanna Ball and Raina Smith.
In the third position,
Ella McGlynn and
Ashlyn Edwards were shutout, 6-0, by Molly Jones and Caitlin Pennington.
SINGLES
In singles play, the Comets and Cardinals battled tough in nearly every match-up. Otterbein claimed four of the six match-ups, with two going down to the wire in third sets.
In first singles, Stephens defeated Ball in two sets, 7-5 and 6-2.
At No. 2 singles, Hansen was upended in a third set by Simmers via set scores of 4-6, 6-4, 2-6.
In the third position, Makris beat Bell in two sets, 6-3, 6-4.
At No. 4 singles, McGlynn pushed Pennington to the lengths in both sets, falling via identical 7-5 scores.
In the fifth position, Rollins was defeated in a long third set match, 2-6, 6-4, 6-7.
At No. 6 singles, Edwards was defeated by Smith in consecutive 6-2 sets.
SENIOR DAY
Prior to the location moving indoors to Westerville, the Comets recognized five seniors in the program for Senior Day –
Abigail Apouvi,
Ashlyn Edwards,
Annika Hansen,
Ella McGlynn, and
Jenny Rollins.
