Rosanna Sguerra Named Head Volleyball Coach

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On Friday morning, Director of Athletics and Recreation, Dr. Darrell Bailey Sr. announced the hiring of Rosanna Sguerra as the next head coach for Capital University volleyball.

"I am excited to welcome Rosanna to the Cap Family!" said Dr. Bailey. "She will bring energy and experience to the Capital University volleyball program; this comes on top of her passion for the Division III student-athlete experience. I'm sure the student-athletes will benefit from her dedicated efforts."

"I am honored to be named the next head volleyball coach at Capital University," said Sguerra. "I'd like to thank Dr. Bailey, Danielle Szalay, the search committee, and the women in the program for all of their work during this process. I am grateful to join the people, campus and community in my hometown of Columbus."

"Dr. Bailey's vision for the athletic department and for the volleyball program excites me," Sguerra continued. "It aligns seamlessly with my own vision to create an amazing experience for our student-athletes, and I cannot wait to get started with the team to build on the competitive excellence and traditions of the Capital volleyball program."

Sguerra arrives at Capital after a two year stint as the head volleyball coach for Kenyon College. While in Gambier, Rosanna navigated the uncertainty and disruption brought on by Covid-19, but still maintained a strong mentorship to her student-athletes while guiding them through a difficult season in the fall of 2021. Despite the difficulties, Rosanna coached one player to All-NCAC honors. Furthermore, 10 of her student-athletes were named to the NCAC Academic Honor Roll for their work in the classroom. Also with Kenyon, Sguerra was a Co-Advisor to the KSAAC group.

Prior to taking over the Kenyon program, Sguerra held multiple assistant coaching positions in and around the Columbus area. For three years, Sguerra served as the top assistant coach with Denison University. There she assisted with team administration, organizing team travel, recruiting and game management. While with the Big Red, Sguerra assisted in the mentorship of six All-NCAC players, including the 2017 Libero of the Year and the 2018 Newcomer of the Year. During the 2019 season, a year in which the Big Red went 18-8, Sguerra worked closely with the NCAC Coach of the Year, Carter Cassell. Off the court, she headed up the Denison Top-50 student-athlete banquet.

Before joining the Big Red, Sguerra worked her first collegiate coaching job as the graduate assistant with fellow OAC school, Otterbein University for one full year. While with the Cardinals, Sguerra helped the team to a 16-14 record and assisted in the mentorship of two All-OAC players.

In addition to her collegiate coaching, Rosanna has held an assistant coach position with the Columbus School for Girls. She has also worked as an Indoor and Beach Volleyball Coach with Advancement Academy Volleyball Club in Westerville for nearly a decade.

Throughout her career, Sguerra has completed two courses notable for her development in the field. She has taken part in the NCAA Women Coaches Academy through WeCOACH in December of 2017 and she attended the NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar at the NCAA headquarters in February of 2019.

A Columbus native, Sguerra attended St. Francis DeSales and was a three-sport athlete in volleyball, basketball, and track & field. She went on to attend Ohio State, where she played on the club volleyball team. She was a two-year club treasurer and a one-year club president of the team, helping them to a runner-up finish at the 2010 NCVF Collegiate Club Volleyball Championships.

Sguerra graduated from Ohio State with a degree in Spanish while also having minored in nutrition. She will officially begin her new role on-campus on Monday, July 11th.
