Women's Tennis Edged Out by Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Capital University women's tennis team battled tough but ultimately lost in a close 5-4 decision to Muskingum University at the Muskie Courts on Thursday afternoon. The match came down to the number three singles bout, where the Muskies claimed the last point in a close singles victory.

All tied at 4-4, Capital freshman MacKenzie Archibald (Parma, Ohio/Parma) took on Lindsay Brindack in the third singles match with the final point on the line. Both players battled valiantly and went into a tiebreaker to claim the point that decided the first set. Brindack won the tiebreaker, 7-3, to claim a 7-6 win in the first set. The battle continued and remained close, but Archibald was unable to overcome her opponent and lost the second set, 6-4. Brindack won the final point for the Muskies, granting them the team victory, 5-4.

After both teams claimed one point out of doubles play, the top flight doubles bout also went to a tiebreak. The team of junior Megan Williams (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont) and senior Monique Hanayik (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) matched up against Elizabeth Knauss and Elisabeth Kuhn. Tied 8-8, the four competitors embarked on a race to seven points, which the Muskies won, granting them the final match point and a 2-1 lead coming out of doubles play.

Also winning a point in doubles was the duo of freshman Desiree Molina and sophomore Katie Woods in the three spot, who defeated Manda Gaeckle and Kristen Chandler, 8-3.

Williams and Hanayik rebounded, each garnering wins in their respective singles matches. Williams in the top flight match defeated Knauss, 6-4, 6-4. Hanayik took down Brittany Besancon by scores of 6-2, 6-1. In the final singles match of the day, freshman Elizabeth Conn won her first singles match of the spring, defeating Sydney McDaniel, 6-1, 6-2.

The loss brings Capital's overall record to 1-10 overall and 0-6 in OAC play. The Purple and White will head to Baldwin Wallace on Saturday, March 22 for an 11 a.m. match with the Yellow Jackets.
