FAIRBORN, Ohio – The Capital University cross country program opened up the 2025 season with a bang, competing at the Mike Baumer Invitational on Friday night. The meet, hosted by Division I Wright State, contained a competitive field of competition consisting of four Division I schools, five Division II schools, two Division III schools and a few running clubs.
Highlighting the day marked several program top-20 marks by both the men and the women, with the premier notable accomplishment marking four men running under the prior school record for a cross country 5K.
Chip Smith will see his name atop the program record board, followed closely by
Mikey Arnone,
Justin Rona, and
Kolin Brake. All four beat out the prior record holder, Derek Knabe's time of 15:59.04 ran in 2017. An additional eight men ran times better than the previous 20th best. On the women's side,
Laney Tarr,
Faith Michel, and
Shelby Janes all clocked times good enough to run in the top-20 of the women's 5K.
WOMEN
As a team, Capital placed ninth overall, beating out the other DIII competitor in Marietta. The squad was led by
Laney Tarr who finished 45th overall in a time of 19:26.5. The time sits her eighth best in program history.
Following closely behind was
Faith Michel who placed 49th overall in 19:31.5. That time now sits her 10th best in program history.
Shelby Janes finished 60th overall with a time of 19:54.7 which sits 13th best in program history.
Catherine Schaub placed 87th in a time of 20:53.7, followed very closely by
Gracyn Hansley who placed 89th in 20:56.8.
Alex Wilkinson finished 96th (21:31.1),
Sienna Pinson was 103rd (22:15.8) and
Chloe Zarlino finished 119th (23:51.6) to round out the Comet showing.
MEN
As a team, Capital finished 10th, beating out their other DIII competition in Marietta.
Chip Smith led Capital with a 47th place finish which also now sets a school record in the cross country 5K.
Mikey Arnone finished 61st with a time of 15:45.3 – a time that sits second best in Cap history.
Justin Rona placed 68th with a time of 15:49.9, which sets him third overall in school history.
Kolin Brake set the fourth best time in school history with a time of 15:51.1 which placed him 71st in the race.
Braydon Nix was right there in the mix, running a time of 16:20.3 which sets him 5th best in program history.
Ridwan Aliawl clocked in at 16:31.0 which is good for 6th best in school history.
Zach Glotzbecker was next to finish for Cap in a time of 16:47.3.
Aiden Mahony then was the next finisher, clocking in at 16:52.8. The time for Mahony moves him up to 11th all-time in Cap history.
Reef Murray had a solid debut race clocking in at 16:57.8 which is good for 14th all-time in Cap history.
Dimetrius Floyd ran a time of 17:01.5, which marks the 15th best time in program history.
Aaron McNutt ran a time of 17:19.8, followed by
Jordan Hull in 17:53.2.
Henry Taylor (18:26.6) and
Aiden Smith (19:14.1) rounded out the Comet performance in the race.

Capital will be back in action next week as they travel across town to compete in the Otterbein Invitational on September 13th.
