Women’s Tennis Beats Franklin and Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Capital University women's tennis team traveled to the campus of Wittenberg University on Saturday afternoon to play two matches, first against Franklin College and then against the hosts Wittenberg. There, Capital emerged with two wins, defeating Franklin 4-3 before sweeping Wittenberg 7-0. 

Capital is now 4-2 on the season, while Franklin is 2-3 and Witt is 0-2. 

Match One: Capital def. Franklin, 4-3
In the first match, both teams split the singles points, but the Comets emerged with the doubles point, which proved to be the difference in the final score of 4-3. 

In doubles play, Capital took both the No. 1 and No. 2 match-ups before falling in the third match-up. Annika Hansen and Stephanie Makris won 6-4, while Ella McGlynn and Scarlett Stephens also won 6-4. Ashlyn Edwards and Addison Kokensparger fell 2-6. 

In singles play, Capital won the Nos. 1, 3, and 5 spots, while Franklin was victorious in the Nos. 2, 4, and 6 spots. 

Scarlett Stephens won 6-1, 6-2; Annika Hansen won 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7), and Ashlyn Edwards won 1-6, 6-2, 1-0. 

Stephanie Makris fell 1-6, 3-6; Ella McGlynn fell 5-7, 0-6; and Addison Kokensparger lost 1-6, 0-6. 

Match Two: Capital def. Wittenberg, 7-0
The Comets got ahead early as Wittenberg was forced to forfeit the No. 3 doubles position and the Nos. 5 and 6 singles spots, conceding two points right away. 

Capital took care of business in the six match-ups that were played, winning all six to finish off the shutout. 

Annika Hansen and Stephanie Makris won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Addison Kokensparger and Scarlett Stephens won 6-0 and No. 2 doubles. Ashlyn Edwards and Ella McGlynn got the win via forfeit at No. 3. 

In singles play, Scarlett Stephens won 6-0, 6-2; Stephanie Makris won 6-0, 6-1; Annika Hansen was victorious 6-2, 6-2; and Aslyn Edwards won 6-0, 6-0. Both Ella McGlynn and Addison Kokensparger picked up forfeit wins as well.

Capital will continue the fall season on Tuesday, September 16th as they travel to Earlham for a 4 p.m. match.
