COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University Director of Athletics Dr. Darrell Bailey Sr. has announced the departure of Head Men's Lacrosse Coach, AJ Smith on Friday morning. Smith, who was the third head coach in program history and led the program successfully through a pivotal re-building period, has accepted a position on the coaching staff at a Division I university.
"We want to thank Coach Smith for all his hard work and dedication to the men's lacrosse program," said Dr. Bailey. " His consistency and dedication inspired his players to be better, and he created a team culture and dynamic that many of them will never forget. I know he will do something big at his next stop! We wish him all the best!"
Smith leaves Capital with an overall record of 31-23 and a 19-8 mark within the OAC conference. All three of his seasons at the helm saw the program finish .500 or better. Throughout his tenure overseeing the Comets, Smith has coached one All-American, one All-Region selection, one OAC player of the Year, and 18 All-OAC selections. On top of the yearly accomplishments, Smith's student-athletes have earned 11 OAC Players of the Week awards and been named to 10 USILA National Teams of the Week.
Notably under Smith's guidance, 2024 OAC Player of the Year
Mason Spaulding earned Capital's first All-American honor in their 11th season as a program. Additionally, Spaulding was named IMLCA All-Region for his efforts.
The search for Smith's successor will begin immediately and interested candidates can reach out to Director of Athletics Dr. Darrell Bailey Sr. for inquiries.
