WESTERVILLE, Ohio – On Monday afternoon, the Ohio Athletic Conference announced the selections of Capital University men's lacrosse senior
Mason Spaulding and softball sophomore
Emma Sweetman as their respective sports' Athletes of the Week.
Spaulding was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week for men's lacrosse, while Sweetman was selected as softball's Hitter of the Week.
This week, Spaulding helped Capital defeat Mount Union 21-8 for their first conference win of the season. In the game, Mason scored four goals and handed out a career-high tying three assists to make up seven points. Elsewhere on the field, Spaulding picked up six ground balls and caused three turnovers. This award marks the fourth time in his career he has been named the OAC's Offensive Player of the Week.
Sweetman helped Capital softball move to 4-0 on the season with a 5-for-9 performance across two wins over Oberlin on Saturday afternoon. In Cap's 11-10 walk-off win in game one, Sweetman was 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs, and a run scored. She also was responsible for putting the ball in play on the final at-bat of the game as her sharp grounder to short forced the Oberlin fielder into an error that allowed the tying and winning runs to score to walk-off the game. In the 11-0 five-inning win in game two, Sweetman was 3-for-4 with a double, a single and her first career home run. Her efforts yielded two more RBIs and two runs scored. This is her first career Athlete of the Week honor.
Looking ahead, the Capital men's lacrosse team will be back in action on Friday, March 29th as they travel to Ohio Northern. The Comets' softball team is busy this week, playing doubleheaders on the road at Wittenberg tonight and Kenyon on Wednesday before returning home to host Otterbein in the annual Battle for the Oar on Friday, March 29th.
