MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- The Capital University men's tennis team traveled to Mount Vernon Nazarene on Thursday afternoon, where they were upended 4-1.
The Comets are now 0-3 this fall in head-to-head matches.
Despite the losing effort, sophomore
Thomas Secrist was a bright spot for Capital as he finished his day 2-0 by winning first singles and doubles (alongside partner
Spencer Surles). At the top singles spot, Secrist defeated Clayton Amburgy with ease, 6-2, 6-1. In doubles play, Secrist and Surles teamed up to win 6-2. Despite the duo winning their head-to-head bout in doubles, NAIA rules give the doubles team point to the team winning two out of three in the doubles match-ups.
Elsewhere in doubles,
Jesse Stevens and
Colin Welch were beat 6-3 at #2 and
Jackson Havel and
Alex Rowley were defeated in a narrow scoreline of 7-5 at #3, thus giving the doubles point to MVNU.
In singles play, the Cougars won #2, #3 and #4 to seal the deal. Surles lost at the second spot 6-2, 2-6, 0-1. Stevens fell at the third singles slot 6-2, 2-6, 0-1. Welch lost his number four spot 4-6, 3-6.
Jackson Havel and
Nicholas Wines both went unfinished in their matches in the fifth and sixth spots due to weather.

Capital will make a quick turnaround to host Franklin College tomorrow, October 6th at 2 p.m. The match will be at Whetstone Park of Roses alongside the Capital women.
