Box Score MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Capital University men's tennis team traveled to Allegheny College this weekend for a two-day invitational. The tournament was set up in a way each player would play multiple singles and doubles matches throughout the two day affair, but rain and poor weather put an end to the event after just eight individual matches took place for Capital.
"I was really pleased with our overall performance this weekend," said head coach
Cody Hurley. "We came in with a lot of inexperience, but fought admirably throughout the challenging slate of matches."
Individually, freshman
Jay Fortner was the lone Comet to play two matches, while
Leonardo Abreu,
Alex Stout,
Luke Ritchie,
Thomas Secrist,
Jackson Havel, and
Brady Wink all got one match in.
Wins came from returners Abreu and Stout, along with newcomers Ritchie and Secrist. Fellow new arrivals Havel, Wink and Fortner all fell in their college debuts to quality opponents.
Abreu defeated Francesco Giannone of Division II Edinboro University via scores of 6-1, 3-6, 10-8. In the third set, Leonardo dug down for a new found sense of competitiveness and composure to battle back from trailing 4-7 in the third set before winning 10-8.
Stout defeated Zach Anderson of Oberlin College by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 10-3. This win proved to be right up near the top of Alex's young collegiate career as Anderson is a proven quality competitor.
Ritchie and Secrist both won their matches by scores of 6-1, 6-2 over Baldwin Wallace opponents. Ritchie defeated Gavin Binni, while Secrist knocked off Jack Hindman. Ritchie, a sophomore transfer from D1 Lafayette, and Secrist, a freshman, were making their debuts for Capital and impressed on the court.
The other three competitors for Cap saw four matches go the way of their opponents. Freshmen
Jay Fortner,
Jackson Havel, and
Brady Wink picked up important match experience on the first weekend of their collegiate careers, but fell in straight sets throughout the day.
Havel lost to BW's Tyler Perkins (6-2, 6-4) and Wink fell to Allegheny's Mitchell Curtis (6-3, 7-5). Fortner was the lone Comet to play two matches as he was knocked off by Allegheny's Adam Shinomiya (6-4, 6-3) and BW's Matt McGee (6-3, 6-3).
"We were disappointed the weather didn't cooperate to give us more opportunities to compete, but we feel really good about where we are right now," continued Hurley. "We are looking forward to getting back to work on Tuesday to prepare for the Comet Invitational next weekend."
