SANDUSKY, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team opened up their season with a split on day one of the Great Lakes Crossover at Cedar Point. After dropping the first match of the day, Capital roared back from a 2-0 deficit to St. Mary's, and won the last three sets to take the match 3-2.
The comeback win for Cap marked the first win at Capital for new head coach
Rosanna Sguerra and moved the team to 1-1 on the year.
MATCH ONE: Allegheny wins 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-19)
The first game of the season went in the favor of the Gators by a scoreline of 3-0, but not without trouble from the Comets. Throughout the contest, Capital struggled offensively, as they connected on just 29 kills on 106 attack attempts. On the contrary, Allegheny put away 37 kills on 103 tries.
Leading the way for Capital in the match was
Audrey James and
Caleigh Hamby who landed seven kills each.
Alissa Holler was behind with four. Hamby was also busy up front swatting back five blocks in the game. She was followed by
Regina Cetnarowski with three and
Sydney LaPointe with two blocks.
Both
Reagan Willoughby and
Jordyn Hoffman shared the setting responsibilities. Willoughby set up 16 assists, while Hoffman put up nine.
Freshman
Abby Brunner made her debut as the libero and had a match-high 20 digs in the back row. Willoughby had nine scoops, and
Paree Furness had seven digs.
Allegheny was led offensively by Cheyenne Wilson and Emma Chambers who had eight kills each. Cetta Panza landed four aces. Leah Ungashick led the setup of the Gator offense with 14 assists. Jacy Diaz led the defense with 18 digs and India McCruter had four blocks.
MATCH TWO: Capital wins 3-2 (24-26, 23-25, 25-14, 25-17, 15-10)
After narrowly dropping the first two sets by just two points each, Capital stormed back to take the match 3-2, marking the first win in the
Rosanna Sguerra era of Capital volleyball.
In the match, several players had solid games, highlighted by strong play from
Lindsay Rich,
Alissa Holler,
Audrey James,
Reagan Willoughby,
Paree Furness, and
Abby Brunner among others.
Offensively, Cap had three players in double digits with kills. Rich led the way with 11, while Holler and James added 10 each. Rich's 11 kills marked a new career high for her and came on just 21 attempts and only two errors, giving her a .429 hitting percentage. In addition to Rich's quality hitting percentage,
Regina Cetnarowski hit at an impressive .545 clip as she landed six kills on 11 attempts and no errors.
Guiding the offense was again guided by Willoughby who set up 22 assists.
Jordyn Hoffman also got in the rotation and set up 15 assists as well.
Rich, Hoffman, and Willoughby all had double-doubles as they were busy defensively as well. Rich complimented her offense with 16 digs - another career best. Hoffman scooped up 11 digs and Willoughby added 13 digs - just one shy of her previous career-best of 14.
Also working well in the back row were
Abby Brunner and
Paree Furness. Brunner had a match-high 31 digs, while Furness added 16 as well.
Across her first two collegiate matches, Brunner scooped up 51 digs – a pretty remarkable number to start off the season.
Also aiding in the blocking game was
Caleigh Hamby and
Larissa Smith who each had four blocks. Cetnarowski added three blocks as well.

The Comets take to the court again tomorrow for two more matches as they spar with Adrian and Thiel Colleges. The Adrian match is scheduled for 10 a.m., while the Thiel match is slated for 2 p.m.
