Men’s Tennis Finishes Weekend With Two More Sweeps

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Capital University men's tennis team concluded an unblemished fall dual match calendar with two more 9-0 results on Saturday. Both matches came on the road as Capital dropped Geneva and Westminster via the shutout.

Capital's fall dual match calendar is now complete with the Comets holding a 4-0 record. That marks the best start by Capital men's tennis since at least 2001 – the season Capital won the OAC Tournament Championship.

"I am so proud of this team," said head coach Cody Hurley. "Four sweeps in three days is a fantastic accomplishment, especially considering we beat two teams that we lost to a year ago. We were our very best this afternoon, only dropping five games combined to Westminster. We have done a great job building momentum into our final weekend of the fall with ITA's in St. Louis and the Big Red Invitational. I am excited to see what we do next!"

MATCH ONE: Capital wins 9-0
The Comets once again started the day well in doubles. Leonardo Abreu and Luke Ritchie got the party started at #1 doubles with an 8-1 win over David Clark and Jalen Landis. Soon after, Jay Fortner and Alex Stout polished off an 8-2 win at the second doubles spot.

In third doubles, Capital garnered their third straight point to prime the singles matches with a 3-0 lead. Freshmen duo Jackson Havel and Brady Wink took down their opposition by a margin of 8-1 as well.

In singles, Thomas Secrist got things going as his match finished 6-0, 6-0 in just 25 minutes of action. The success at singles continued as Jesse Stevens took a win at sixth singles via a 6-3, 6-2 scoreline. Stevens' win clinched the crucial fifth match point for the Comets to push them to 3-0 on the year in dual matches.

With the match secured, Capital went ahead and got the other four points, just for good measure. Leonardo Abreu won 6-1, 6-1 at #1, Jay Fortner won 6-0, 6-0 at #2, Luke Ritchie was successful at #3 with a 6-1, 6-0 decision, and Spencer Surles wrapped it up with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #4.

MATCH TWO: Capital wins 9-0
As if the morning sweep wasn't enough, the Comets got back on the courts in the afternoon and absolutely blitzed the Westminster Titans 9-0. In the match, Capital won 96 of the 101 games available.

Doubles was once again a fluid process for the Comets as the pairings of Leonardo Abreu and Luke Ritchie and Jay Fortner and Alex Stout eased to 8-0 wins. Nabbing the third doubles point were Thomas Secrist and Spencer Surles who won third doubles 8-2.

Again, Capital found it easy to get through singles as well. Leonardo Abreu, Jay Fortner, Alex Stout, and Thomas Secrist all won via 6-0, 6-0 shutouts. The only blemishes – if you could call it that – in singles play came at third singles with Luke Ritchie winning 6-0, 6-1 and at sixth singles where Spencer Surles won 6-1, 6-1.

MATCH INFORMATION
The Comets played four dual matches in the past three days, winning 7-0 in the opener at Mount Vernon Nazarene and then 9-0 in the following three against Franciscan, Geneva and Westminster. Last year, the Comets lost to both MVNU and Franciscan and defeated Geneva. The team did not see Westminster.

In the past three matches, Capital won all 45 necessary sets to sweep through their fall competition. Capital finished the weekend with their best match yet, dropping just five total games to Westminster.

UP NEXT
Despite the Comets' dual fall season concluding today, the team will send individuals to compete at both the ITA Central Regionals -- hosted in St. Louis, Missouri -- and the Big Red Invitational -- hosted by nationally ranked Denison University -- next weekend. These two events will be the last two until the spring commences.
