Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ohio – It was an exciting weekend for the Capital University men's tennis team as they played host to the Comet Invitational at the home for CU men's tennis, Wolfe Park. Nearby Ohio Wesleyan University as well as Lourdes University made up the rest of the field. The Comets not only hosted the tournament but also competed quite well too, finishing the weekend with an overall record of 18-11.
SINGLES
Among the overall success, Capital boasted two singles flight champions in
Luke Ritchie and
Thomas Secrist.
Ritchie – a transfer from Division I Lafayette – conquered Flight B, taking down Ohio Wesleyan's Kobe Frances (6-4, 4-6, 12-10), and Lourdes' Ulises Barradas (4-4, retired due to injury) and Alvaro Trillo-Sanchez (6-1, 6-2) in the process.
Secrist made his way through the Flight C bracket, trouncing OWU's Sam Gadkar (6-0, 6-0) and Tucker Strawser (6-1, 6-3), as well as Lourdes' Niladri Aich (6-1, 6-1).
Also competing in Flight B was
Spencer Surles. Surles had very close matches, but unfortunately came up short against Luis Guzman (LU) (5-7, 6-3, 8-10). He came back in the later matches and defeated OWU's Rainer Holl (4-6, 6-2, 10-8).
In the quarterfinals of Flight A, Leonardo Abrue defeated the #2 seed, Saranpahon Siriwanichkul (OWU), (7-6, 1-6, 12-10) in a two hour and forty-five minute match. Abrue finished the match with a record of 2-1.
CU proved to be superior over Ohio Wesleyan with an 8-2 record. The Comets struggled to keep up with Lourdes, managing a 3-5 record.
The Comets concluded their singles matches with an overall record of 12-8.
DOUBLES
The doubles pairing of
Jay Fortner and
Alex Stout finished their session unbeaten. The duo defeated Lourdes' pair 8-4 as well as the pair from Ohio Wesleyan 8-2.
Capital's doubles teams experienced great success over Ohio Wesleyan, sweeping the Battling Bishops in five straight matches. However, things were not as smooth against Lourdes as the Gray Wolves got the best of the Purple and White, 3-1.
The Comets finished their doubles matches with a record of 6-3.
FIRST COLLEGIATE WINS
It was quite the tournament for
Jay Fortner,
Jackson Havel and
Brady Wink as they all picked up their first collegiate wins.
Jay Fortner won twice in doubles with
Alex Stout, topping OWU 8-4 and Lourdes 8-2.
Jackson Havel and
Brady Wink won as a doubles team, taking down the OWU pairing 8-3. Havel also bagged his first collegiate singles win against OWU's Sam Gadkar (6-0, 6-0).
