Box Score BEREA, Ohio – In a match that proved to be as close as tennis scores come, the Capital University women's tennis team fell in a heartbreaking match to Baldwin Wallace University by a final score of 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.
With the team scores tied 4-4, the #5 singles match between Capital's
Josie Nichols and BW's Emma Trost carried on into a wild third set tiebreaker that ultimately fell in favor of the hosts, giving them the slimmest of victories and knocking the Comets out of the tournament. Trost won the match by scores of 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).
In doubles competition, Capital won the No. 3 match-up as
Nicole Flock and
Hayley Singleton teamed up to defeat Hanna LeMaster and Mattie Hicks by a score of 8-4. At #1 doubles,
Kelli Wright-Lovell and
Anna Fletcher fell 4-8, and at #2 doubles,
Amy Wright-Lovell and
Josie Nichols fell 1-8.
In singles play, Capital roared back to tie the score at 4-4 before the ultimate final point swayed in the direction of the Yellow Jackets. Being successful in singles play were
Kelli Wright-Lovell winning first singles 6-4, 7-5;
Anna Fletcher rebounding from a first set loss to win second singles 1-6, 6-2, 6-2; and
Nicole Flock being successful at third singles with a score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. The fourth, fifth, and sixth singles match-ups all went in favor of the hosts unfortunately, allowing BW to move on and Capital to conclude their season.
Amy Wright-Lovell finished #4 with scores of 1-6, 2-6; Nichols finished #5 with the aforementioned tight third-set tiebreaker; and
Karen Kanke dropped the sixth singles match with a score of 2-6, 1-6.
The Comets conclude their 2021-22 campaign with an overall record 5-9 and an OAC record of 3-4. Capital will return a large portion of the roster for next season, hoping to build on their foundation set this season.
