OBERLIN, Ohio – The Capital University men's and women's track and field teams traveled up to Oberlin College for the Spring Opener yesterday for their first competition in almost a month. Ohio's spring weather has caused some delays in competition for the squad who finally got a chance to compete in some decent conditions.
The day of action went very well for the Comets as Capital claimed first place in five events, second in five others and cracked three program all-time top-10 lists.
On the women's side,
Larissa Agbor-Nkongho took first in the 200 and second in the 100,
Anya Vanasdale improved her all-time 1500 meter time, and
Alexa Poling improved her farthest hammer throw mark.
For the men,
Daniel Hiser and
Ishmael Young traded first and second place in the 100 and 200 sprints,
Donovan Slattery won the steeplechase,
Andy Fullmer took second in the long jump, and
Jonathan Kirk claimed second in the shot put.
Below is a summary of top performances:
Men's 3,000 Steeplechase:
Donovan Slattery won the event with a time of 10:01.75. The time was an 11-second improvement from his previous best that currently sits him sixth all-time in Capital history.
Men's 100 Meter Dash:
Ishmael Young finally got the better of teammate
Daniel Hiser and claimed the win with a time of 11.27 seconds. Hiser was second with a time of 11.33 seconds. Also competing in the event were
Kelly Wilson II (7th - 11.85 seconds),
Andy Fullmer (8th - 11.85 seconds),
Ethan Barton (11th - 12.03 seconds), and
Brandon Rex (15th - 12.27 seconds).
Men's 200 Meter Dash: Hiser responded by beating Young in the 200 meter dash, winning the event with a time of 22.58 seconds. Young was just behind with a 22.91 second time. Also competing in the event were Wilson II (9th - 24.17 seconds), Barton (12th - 24.89 seconds), Rex (13th - 25.62 seconds ), and
Nick Stuck (16th - 25.62 seconds).
Men's Pole Vault:
Zion Park won the event clearing the bar at 4.25 meters.
Men's Long Jump:
Andy Fullmer placed second in the event with a leap of 6.44 meters. Park was also in the event, placing seventh with a 5.50 meter mark.
Men's Shot Put:
Jonathan Kirk placed second in the event with a throw of 13.50 meters.
Hayden Shaffer was just behind with a toss of 12.82 meters, good for fifth place.
Men's Discus:
Hayden Shaffer finished third with a throw of 40.41 meters. Kird (9th - 34.80 meters) and Fullmer (17th - 30.58 meters) also competed in the event.
Men's 110 Meter Hurdles:
Kelly Wilson II finished third in the event with a time of 15.82 seconds.
Men's 1500 Meter Run:
Ben Loeper led the way for Cap with a time of 4:13.38, placing fifth.
Sam Siedel (20th - 4:37.00),
Bobby Cole (25th - 4:52.34), and
Jason McColl (26th - 4:54.56) were next in the finishing for Cap.
Men's 800 Meter Run: Loeper was the top finisher again as he placed sixth with a time of 2:06.73. Siedel finished 13th with a time of 2:12.42.
Aidan Cunningham finished up the Comet performances in the event with a time of 2:15.33.
Women's 200 Meter Dash:
Larissa Agbor-Nkongho won the event with a time of 27.29 seconds.
Cece Samuels was just back in third, running a time of 28.09 seconds.
Hanna Bauer (7th - 28.62 seconds),
Olivia Humes (14th - 29.19 seconds),
Natashia Amoako (18th - 29.74 seconds), and
Kaya Milby (19th - 29.92 seconds) rounded out the event.
Women's 100 Meter Dash: Agbor-Nkongho finished second in the shorter sprint race, running a time of 13.21 seconds. Samuels was next with 13.57 seconds. Bauer finished with a 13.72 second time. Milby clocked 13.86 seconds. Amoako ran a 14.07 second time. Humes ran a 14.24 second time.
Women's 1500 Meter Run:
Anya Vanasdale finished third with a time of 5:04.36. Vanasdale's previous best time of 5:08.55 sat ninth best all-time, so her time ran at Oberlin will move her up to sixth best.
Heather Fryman also ran the event with a time of 6:06.44 – a new PR.
Women's 800 Meter Run:
Alexa Daley placed third with a time of 2:29.53. Vanasdale placed seventh in 2:32.72.
Allison Costanzo placed 11th with a time of 2:37.43.
Elizabeth Mak placed 21st with a time of 2:47.82.
Grace Lockard was 28th with a time of 2:56.78.
Women's 4x400 Meter Relay: The quartet of Daley, Costanzo, Mak and Lockard finished third with a time of 4:39.96.
Women's Pole Vault:
Bella McCarty placed third with a best leap of 2.58 meters.
Women's Hammer Throw:
Alexa Poling placed eighth overall, with a top mark of 42.47 meters. Her previous best throw of 41.33 meters sat her seventh all-time in program history. Her new throw leap frogs Bethany Kirk for sixth all-time in Capital history.
Women's Shot Put:
Grace Heckenlively placed eighth with her best throw registering 10.46 meters. Poling also threw in the event with a mark of 9.89 meters.

Capital will look to travel across town to compete at the Marv Frye Invitational, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University next Saturday, April 9th.
