Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Despite some excellent displays of tennis from a freshman-laden lineup, the Capital University men's tennis team narrowly dropped their first match of the season this afternoon.
Playing on the road to Mount Vernon Nazarene, Cap was upended by a final score of 4-3.
Capital got off the ground early by taking the lone point up for grabs at doubles. Playing at an NAIA opponent, the doubles round is scored in a best of three series, with the winner claiming a team point. Playing first doubles, freshman duo
Leonardo Abreu and
Alex Stout claimed the bout via a score of 6-1. At second doubles, another freshman tandem in
Spencer Surles and
Colin Welch won their match with a 6-3 margin. Third doubles went in favor of Mt. Vernon as
Aaron Askew and
Jesse Stevens were upended 6-1.
The Purple and White claimed their first singles point at second singles as
Alex Stout won a difficult match by a margin of 6-1, 7-5.
Things kept moving for Capital in an intense first singles match.
Leonardo Abreu took the first set 6-4, then dropped the second set 6-7. In the super tiebreaker, Abreu stormed back from a 6-2 deficit to claim the victory in favor of CU with a 10-7 decision.
On third and fourth singles,
Spencer Surles dropped his decision 6-4, 6-4 and
Colin Welch was knocked off via a 6-0, 6-2 scoreline.
Capital also dropped points at fifth and sixth singles as
Jesse Stevens and
Aaron Askew fell via two-set decisions.
The Purple and White hit the road tomorrow as they travel to Washington and Jefferson for two matches. First, Cap will play Pittsburgh-Greensburg at 3 p.m. and then will face hosts, W&J at 7 p.m.
