COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team (7-6) fell in two games at Transylvania (6-5), 13-0 and 10-9 on Wednesday. Transylvania led from the start in the early game but the late game was an exciting one as the Crusaders battled back from two deficits to take it to extras before the Pioneers prevailed in the 10th inning.
GAME ONE
- Offense was hard to come by in the first game of the day for the Crusaders, going down by a run in the third inning before the Pioneer offense heated up and ran away with it.
- Sophomore Bryce Grisez tallied two of Capital's three hits in the contest.
- Freshman Curtis Clark made it through three frames relatively unscathed, allowing just one run and fanning three, until Transylvania's offense found a groove and tagged him for seven more runs.
GAME TWO
- Capital jumped out to an early lead, loading the bases in the first inning and scoring on a Brandon Barnette walk. They quickly added two more runs in the second as Beau Otto singled to short to score Ellis and Shayne Lyons doubled to drive in Cole Callaghan.
- Transylvania scored two of their runs in the bottom of the second and managed to score one run in four straight innings to build a 6-3 lead.
- The Crusaders bats came alive in the seventh, starting with a Lyons single that snuck through the left side to score Otto and Callaghan.
- Back-to-back hits from Connor Richardson and Barnette drove in two more runs to regain the lead for the Crusaders, 7-6.
- In the eighth inning, Callaghan tagged his first home run of the season to build the Capital lead but the Pioneers came back in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own to take the lead back.
- Leading off the ninth, Transylvania went to their pen again to protect their one run lead but Richardson had other ideas, belting his second home run of the campaign to bring things back to even at 9-9.
- Lyons, Grisez and Richardson loaded the bases in the top of the 10th, but Capital was unable to push a run across as Barnette grounded into an inning ending double play.
- Jared Heidecker trotted back out for his third inning of work and was able to get one out before a Transylvania single scored a runner from second to end the game.
THE SCOREBOOK
- After being held to three hits in the first game, the Capital offense exploded for 15 in the second.
- Otto and Lyons both rallied back from hitless outings to scatter seven hits between them. Otto collected four hits and an RBI while Lyons drove in three runs on three knocks.
- Callaghan scored three times in the second contest, bringing himself around with his first home run of the season. He also walked once and swiped two bags.
- Curtis Clark started the early game for Capital, being chased after four innings, allowing eight runs and striking out three.
- Tucker Craft went 6.1 innings in the late game, scattering 14 hits but limiting the damage to four earned runs.
