COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's lacrosse team came up with a big win over DePauw University, down one goal headed into the fourth quarter before the Crusaders exploded for six goals in the final frame to take the victory.
EVENLY MATCHED
- Capital opened the action with an unassisted goal from sophomore Jack Scharner and followed up with a goal from senior Carter McCormick with 5:22 left in the first to take a 2-0 lead.
- DePauw came roaring back in the end of the quarter to score three goals and opened the second quarter with another to give them a 4-2 advantage.
- Senior Talbott Gottwals had something to say about that, scoring two goals in 35 seconds, one on a man-up opportunity, to even things back up.
- Senior CJ Hughes netted his lone goal of the day to answer a DePauw goal and Scharner did the same, scoring his second with just 24 seconds left in the half to pull even at 6-6.
LATE GAME MAGIC
- The Tigers opened the second half with three consecutive goal that put the Crusaders in a 9-6 hole.
- Not to be outdone on their home field, the Crusaders went to work, pulling within one by the end of the third with goals from Spencer Towne and Adam Rieger.
- The fourth quarter was all Purple and White as senior Luke Wyatt scored back to back unassisted goals to take the lead. On his second goal, Wyatt cut across the right side and fired of the shot before taking a big hit that did not even faze him as the ball found the net and he leapt up to celebrate.
- Capital kept pouring it on as the quarter wound down, getting scores from McCormick, Gottwals and Rieger to build a four goal lead at 13-9 with 6:35 left to play.
- The Tigers scored twice late but Scharner had the last laugh, collecting a perfect pass from the driving Lake Harris to post a final score of 14-11.
KEY STATS
- Five different Capital players turned in multi-goal performances versus DePauw.
- Gottwals led the way for the scorers, collecting five points on three goals and two assists while nabbing three ground balls.
- Scharner was close behind with three goals and one assist to post four points for the contest.
- McCormick and Wyatt each scored twice and dished out one assist to each gather three points along with CJ Hughes who tallied two assists and a goal.
- Tyler Faig and Lake Harris dominated the faceoffs, combining for 18-29 for the day. Faig did most of the heavy lifting, winning 13 of the 20 faceoffs he fought over.
- The Crusaders peppered the opposing keeper, firing 34 shots on goal to the Tigers 16.
