COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Crusaders baseball team continued its successful spring break trip, downing NVU-Lyndon 14-4 in its latest contest, moving to 6-2 on the season. Freshman Garrott Kennedy led the offensive effort versus the Hornets driving in four runs while manning second base.
MOVE THE LINE
- NVU-Lyndon drew first blood, scoring a run on a fielder's choice in the top of the second.
- The lead would not hold for long as the Crusaders Konnor Black tied it up, scoring on a passed ball and shortly after, Kennedy flied out to center to bring in junior Drew Ellis.
- The teams remained neck and neck through the fifth inning with each team scoring again to knot it up at 5-5.
- The freshman Tucker Craft toed the rubber for the Crusaders, tossing 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits before being relieved by Garrett Montgomery.
- From that point on it was all Capital. Sophomore Bryce Grisez started the action, being hit by a pitch and then advancing to second on a wild pitch. An error by the right fielder pushed Grisez to third and put Richardson on second.
- A wild pitch and a Brandon Barnette double cleared the bases, giving the Crusaders a two run advantage.
- The team would score two more runs before the inning was over on a Black single and Kennedy walk which made the score 8-4.
- The seventh inning mirrored the start of the sixth with Grisez providing the spark after being hit by another pitch and then stealing second. Richardson drove him in on the next play with a single to left field.
- As the inning progressed, the line just kept moving as more runs crossed the plate, amounting to the final score of 14-4.
THE SCOREBOOK
- Montgomery came on in relief in the fifth inning and pitched 4.2 hitless innings to slam the door on the Hornets. The freshman threw 43 of his 59 pitches for strikes, inducing eight groundouts in the process.
- The offensive production was a true team effort in this one, as eight players contributed at least one hit to the team's total of 10.
- Richardson and Black each produced two hit efforts, combining for three RBI.
- Kennedy only cracked one hit for the afternoon but still drove in four, with a double and a walk in five plate appearances.
