COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital baseball (5-2) was up against it this afternoon, fitting in two scheduled contests around the finicky Florida weather and coming out on the wrong side of both, falling to Castleton 7-1 to start the day and Alma 3-0 in the afternoon at Chain of Lakes Park in Auburndale, Fla.

GAME ONE

  • The contest was tough from the start as the Castleton hitters jumped on freshman starter Kaleb Thompson, working the bases and scoring on two sacrifice flies in the first inning.
  • Castleton would strike again in the third inning, driving Thompson from the game, scoring three runs before they could be retired to push the deficit to 5-0.
  • Meanwhile, the Crusader offense faltered for the first time this season, scattering six hits across nine innings, two of which came in the final frame and led to the team's lone run in the 7-1 defeat.

GAME TWO

  • Game two came against Alma, a team that the Crusaders had already played twice Monday, besting them with 16 runs across two seven inning contests.
  • This six inning rematch would not fall Capital's way and though the lineup dropped in six hits, were unable to manufacture runs.
  • Freshman Domenico Gioiello gave up three runs through four innings on the mound, which proved to be the difference as the teams packed up to beat the rain, posting a 3-0 final.
