COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball offense has been on fire since the beginning of the season, scoring at least eight runs in each of their first five games, the most recent being a 16 run assault versus Franklin College that moved the team to 5-0.
RUNS APLENTY
- Connor Richardson started the onslaught with a double to lead off the second inning. Brandon Barnette dug into the box and took the Grizzlies starter over the left field fence, putting two runs on the board.
- This started the train rolling as Capital played the epitome of small ball, drawing four walks and swatting three singles to amass five more runs and chase the starter from the game after just 1.2 innings.
- In the third inning, Logan White singled and was driven in by a Konnor Black triple to right center, scoring in his own right on a throwing error to bring the score to 9-0.
- The Crusader offense erupted again in the fifth inning, continually moving the line with singles and walks while also capitalizing on Franklin errors. Shane Lyons and Richardson added to their four hit days with singles that piled onto the already inflated lead. Chasing another pitcher from the game, the Capital offense pushed across six more runs on four hits to build a 15 run lead.
- The Grizzlies answered with three runs in the fifth and two in the seventh but would not come within striking distance of the 16-5 lead.
THE PITCHING STAFF
- In the past, the pitching staff has been a sticking point for the Crusaders but through five games this season, games have been kept well in hand, allowing for the offense to take over.
- Capital's number one starter, sophomore Scott Gutstein, got the nod today and picked up his first win of the season, striking out 10 and allowing three runs through five innings.
- Freshman Garrett Montgomery relieved Gutstein, pitching the final two innings, striking out four and giving up two runs in the victory.
THE SCOREBOOK
- Lyons, the heavy hitting first baseman, collected four hits and three RBI in the outing.
- Richardson also turned in a four hit performance, scoring three times and driving in two.
- Sophomore catcher Barnette turned in one of the best games of his young career, clubbing his first career homerun, driving in four and walking once.

- Capital continues their crusade down in Florida, taking on Castleton and Alma in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
