COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team played two solid games against Alma College, propelled by stout pitching and 16 runs across the two seven inning contests to remain unbeaten at 4-0.
GAME ONE
- Good pitching kept bats quiet for both teams before Capital broke through in the bottom of the third inning.
- Two bunt singles by Kyle Karchefsky and Cole Callaghan loaded the bases. All three runners rounded the bases after the combination of a Beau Otto groundout and Shane Lyons single up the middle gave the Crusaders a 3-0 advantage.
- Later in the inning, Brandon Barnette singled through the left side to drive in the fourth run of the inning.
- Capital would strike again in the fifth inning, building an insurmountable lead after more Connor Richardson heroics. With Grisez and Otto on base, Richardson roped a triple down the right field line to clear the bases and on the very next play scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 7-1.
- Freshman Brennon Newell pitched six strong innings, allowing just one run and fanning three when he handed the rock off to Spencer Knight.
- The Scots jumped on Knight in the top of the seventh but Garrett Montgomery was able to stifle the opposing offense and close out the game with a final of 8-4.
GAME TWO
- The Crusaders struck first again in the late game, capitalizing on two Scots errors to score two runs in the third inning.
- Alma managed to push two runners across in the third and fourth innings but the damage was limited from there as sophomore Tate Virts slammed the door on the offense, going the distance and not allowing any more runs.
- Richardson added another hit to his day, singling through the left side to bring Grisez in to score in the fifth. Bethay drew a walk later in the inning with the bases loaded that scored one more and pushed the lead to 4-2.
- Adding one more run in the sixth and three in the seventh, the Crusaders cruised to an 8-2 victory and the sweep.

- Otto collected three more hits across the two games, bringing his season tally to 11 through just four games.
