Cap Baseball Falls to Kenyon in Weekend Finale

Box Score

By: Sean Neidig, sports information graduate assistant

GAMBIER, Ohio – Capital University Baseball traveled to Kenyon College on Sunday looking to salvage a win from the weekend but fell 19-7.

The Crusaders struck first in the top of the first inning when a single from Shayne Lyons scored Joe Caporale who hit a double earlier in the frame. In the bottom of the inning though Kenyon's offense returned the favor with four runs. The Lords then added six runs in the second inning, two in the third and five in the fourth to take a 17-1 lead after four.

After scoreless fifth and sixth innings, Capital's offense got moving again in the seventh. Brandon Barnette led off the inning with a single and after an out, Cole Callaghan was hit by a pitch. Beau Otto worked a walk to load the bases and then a passed ball allowed Barnette to score. A wild pitch then allowed Callaghan to come home and Joe Caporale grounded out but Otto came around to score to make the score 17-4.

The Lords pulled one back in the bottom of the seventh and scored another in the eighth but in the ninth Capital was able to add a few more runs.

Dakota DeStefano singled to start things off and Callaghan struck out swinging but reached first in a dropped third strike and stole second. An error by Kenyon's shortstop allowed Caporale to reach safely and DeStefano scored. AJ Albanese then singled home Callaghan and two batters later, Tom Cavanaugh singled down the line in right to score another run. That was all the offense the Crusaders could muster though before the frame ended.

Barnette led the team with two hits and Caporale had a team-high two RBIs in four at-bats.

Another nonconference matchup awaits Capital on Tuesday, March 26 when the Crusaders will travel to Bluffton University. First pitch against the Beavers is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
