COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's tennis team lost an 8-1 decision to NCAA Division II opponent Cedarville University at Scarborough East Tennis Club on Friday evening.
Capital (0-2) was scheduled to play the Yellow Jackets (1-1) at Wolfe Park but rains swept through the area shortly before warmups and forced both teams to relocate to Scarborough East Tennis Club. There, Cedarville pulled away with its first win of the season.
The Crusaders played with a short lineup on Friday, giving the Yellow Jackets two points by virtue of defaulted matches, one in doubles and one in singles play. Cedarville came out with wins at number one and two doubles to go up 3-0 before the turn. Sophomores Madison Watt and junior Maria Sadek lost in the top spot, 8-4, to Liana English and Rosie Thompson. Freshman Karen Kanke and junior MacKenzie Archibald lost, 8-2, to Halie Hardwick and Meghan Gallogly.
Archibald garnered Capital's lone point with a win at number four singles. The Parma, Ohio native took down Cylie Aronsohn in a tight match but came away with the victory (7-5, 6-4).
Cedarville went on to take the remaining singles matches with losses coming to Watt in the top spot (vs. Liana English 6-4, 6-0), Sadek at number two (vs. Rosie Thompson 6-3, 6-4), Kanke at number three (vs. Olivia Ancil 6-0, 6-4) and freshman Kelsey Kitchel (vs. Laura Bowen 6-0, 6-0).
Capital's next match will be a home contest on Sunday, September 23 versus Defiance College. The Crusaders will begin play at 4 p.m. at Wolfe Park in Bexley.
