Ellis' Double Lifts Cap to Win, Cap Splits Thursday Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

By: Ryan Gasser, sports information director

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.Drew Ellis had a busy day for Capital University Baseball on Thursday with a game-winning hit and a serviceable day on the mound for the Crusaders. Joseph Borkey also had a strong showing on the bump in his first win of the season over Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.). Alma College came back to best Cap, 2-1, in the nightcap.

GAME 1 - Concordia-Moorehead 1, Capital 3

Capital freshman Drew Ellis (Doylestown, Ohio/Chippewa) and junior Joseph Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio/Lake Catholic) combined to serve as the heroes of Thursday's win over the Cobbers. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Capital took advantage of a pair of passed balls that scored Joe Caporale, but Ellis earned the credit for driving home the game-winning run. Doug Connor and Ben Bethay got on base via a walk and base hit. With two runners on, Ellis drove a two-run double to score both runners to give Capital a 3-1 lead.

Borkey (W, 1-1) cruised through the Cobber lineup to keep the game close and set up the late offensive heroics. After allowing one run in the first inning, Borkey allowed just one base runner through the next four innings and retired the side in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings. No runner advanced beyond first base at any point during his time on the hill. He struck out nine Concordia-Moorhead hitters over seven innings of work and recorded at least one strikeout in each inning of work.

Nick Beck (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) earned the long save with two innings of shutout relief without allowing a base runner. The junior struck out two hitters while retiring the side in order to close out the game for his first career save.

GAME 2 - Capital 1, Alma 2

Despite a low-scoring game, Capital and Alma was locked into a heated battle that saw fire after fire extinguished over the course of the game Capital struck first when Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif./Cosumnes Oaks) drove home Beau Otto from third with a single up the middle, but that served as the team's only run.

Likewise, Alma had just one hit that scored both of its runs when nine hitter Matt Minaudo hit a two-run home run over the left field fence off of Drew Ellis to take the lead. Ellis went on to keep the damage to just that, and then Casey Hamrick and Alex Mukensturm pitched four shutout innings in relief.

Capital left eight runners on base, including the potential tying run in the ninth inning. Otto hit a two-out single, but Alma's Joseph Barrons finished his complete game with a strikeout.

The Crusaders (4-3) will continue its spring break stay at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational Friday, March 2. Capital will play Rhode Island College at 4:30 p.m. and wrap up its stay on Saturday versus Neumann College.
