Capital Wins Game Two to Prevent Sweep

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team hosted Baldwin Wallace University in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Clowson Field Saturday afternoon. Baldwin Wallace won game one, 9-2, but the Crusaders came out on top in game two, 6-3. Doug Connor went 3-for-7 to lead Cap.

Game 1 – Baldwin Wallace 9, Capital 2

The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the top of the second inning when Jacob Bonner singled to the short stop and allowed Alex Marcum to score. Baldwin Wallace added four runs on five hits in the visitor half of the third to extend its lead to 5-0.

Sophomore Doug Connor (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) drew a walk to start the home half of the fifth. Sophomore Joe Caporale (Mayfield, Ohio / Mayfield) singled to right field and advanced Connor to second. Senior Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio / Licking Heights) flew out to right field and allowed Connor to move up to third. Junior Travis Gilbert (Marion, Ky. / Crittenden County) grounded out to the second baseman, but picked up the RBI when Connor scored from third.

Cole Nieto recorded a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning and scored Chase Knodle. Marcum hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to extend the Yellow Jackets lead to 9-1.

Connor started the bottom of the ninth off with a single up the middle. After a passed ball moved Connor to second, Caporale grounded out and allowed Connor to move to third. Foley singled to right field and picked up an RBI as Connor scored.

Junior Joseph Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio / Lake Catholic) got the loss in game one, but went eight innings with four strike outs.

Logan Heffernan picked up the win as he pitched eight innings, with five strike outs, and gave up just three hits.

Game 2 – Capital 6, Baldwin Wallace 3

Junior Daniel Walters (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) started the bottom of the second inning off with a single to the pitcher. Connor grounded out and moved Walters up one base to second. Senior Tyler Gibbons (Liberty Township, Ohio / Lakota East) ripped a pitch down the right field line and scored Walters from second.

In the bottom of the third, junior Alexander Smith singled to center field with one out. Smith advanced to second base on a passed ball. Freshman Beau Otto (Cincinnati, Ohio / Roger Bacon) singled to the pitcher and put runners on the corners with one out. Senior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio / Lexington) hit a single up the middle and plated Smith from third. Walters flew out to right field and allowed Otto to move to third. Connor then lined one down the right field line for a double that scored Otto and Bastin. Capital held a 4-0 lead after four innings of play.

Trent Kaltenbach tripled down the left field line to start the Baldwin Wallace half of the fifth inning. Bonner then grounded out and scored Kaltenbach. The Yellow Jackets added two more runs in the top of the seventh. The two runs came on two hits.

The Crusaders added two insurance runs in the home portion of the eighth. Junior Zackary Ary (London, Ohio / Jonathan Alder) recorded a one-out single to left field. Foley followed that with a single up the middle. Gilbert sent a pitch back up the middle and scored Ary from second. Caporale reached on a fielder's choice as Gilbert was out at second. Smith lined one to center field which scored Foley from third.

Michael Hubert picked up the loss in game two. He went 2.2 innings and gave up four earned runs.

Freshman Ross Thompson (Wadsworth, Ohio / Wadsworth) earned his first collegiate win. Thompson tossed six innings and struck out one batter.

Connor tallied two hits in the game and added two RBIs. Junior Connor Hopkins (Highland Heights, Ohio / Benedictine) had a 2-for-3 game. Smith posted a 2-for-5 performance with an RBI and a run scored.

With the split, Capital is now 16-17 overall and 4-10 in OAC play. The Crusaders return to action as they travel to Ada, Ohio next Saturday for an OAC doubleheader against the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
