Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team travelled to the No. 30 University of Mount Union Purple Raiders Friday afternoon. Cap fell in the first game, 1-0, behind a stellar performance by Brendon Borkey. Mount took game two, 7-6. Alexander Smith was 2-for-5 at the plate in game two with one RBI.

Game 1 – Mount Union 1, Capital 0

The first game of the day turned out to be a pitchers' duel, as both starting pitchers hurled complete games.

Senior Brendon Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio / Lake Catholic) took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth inning of game one. The first hit was given up with two outs. Borkey threw a complete game, struck out five batters, scattered five hits, and allowed just one run on the day. This was Borkey's second complete game of the season.

Borkey's counterpart, Phil Mary, picked up the win for Mount Union with a complete game shutout. Mary struck out 10 and gave up just three hits.

The Purple Raiders scored in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kyle Spellman singled up the middle and then stole second. Nate Owen drove in Spellman with a single down the left field line. One run was all that would be needed as Mount took game one 1-0.

Game 2 – Mount Union 7, Capital 6

Mount Union jumped out to an early lead when it scored in the bottom of the first on a single by Keleman.

In the top of the third, junior Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif. / Cosumnes Oaks) started Cap off with a single up the middle. Smith advanced to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Beau Otto (Cincinnati, Ohio / Roger Bacon) laid down a bunt and advanced Smith to third. Senior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio / Lexington) reached safely on an error by the second baseman. Smith scored on the play. After a ground out moved Bastin to second, sophomore Doug Connor (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins Memorial) singled to right field and scored Bastin from second. Capital took its first lead of the day 2-1.

The Purple Raiders regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth. They scored three runs, on three hits and took a 4-2 lead through the sixth inning.

Otto started the top of the seventh off with a triple to left field. Junior Daniel Walters (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) grounded out to second, but picked up an RBI when Otto scored from third.

Sophomore Joe Caporale (Mayfield, Ohio / Mayfield) got the top of the eighth started with a single to left field. Caporale advanced to second on a sac bunt by junior Zackary Ary (London, Ohio / Jonathan Alder). Smith recorded a two-out single through the left side that scored pinch runner Sean Pettibone (Ashville, Ohio / Teays Valley) from second. Otto then walked and Smith advanced to third on a passed ball on ball four. Bastin then sent a pitch to right field for an RBI single to score Smith. Walters was then hit by a pitch, which loaded the bases for Cap. All runners advanced on a wild pitch and Otto scored. Capital held a 6-4 lead after seven and a half innings of play.

Conner Koski singled through the right side that allowed two runs to score to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. With bases loaded, Jimmy Scott was hit by a pitch and scored Koski from third for the go-ahead run.

Junior Joseph Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio / Lake Catholic) got a no-decision, but went five innings and struck out seven batters. Joseph Borkey gave up four runs on four hits. Senior Tyler Spears (Washington Courthouse, Ohio / Washington) picked up the loss. Spears pitched a third of an inning and gave up two runs on two hits.
