Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season with Loss to Wittenberg

DAYTON, Ohio – Capital Men's Tennis opened the spring portion of its season on the road in a neutral site match against Wittenberg University on Saturday evening. The two squared off at the Schroeder Tennis Center in Dayton, Ohio where the Tigers came out with an 8-1 victory over the Crusaders.

Capital began positively, taking one of its two doubles matches after the pair of senior Dale Booher (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) and junior C.J. Martin (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) teamed up for an 8-4 win over Luke Minard and Timmy McNulty of Wittenberg. After taking the point out of the top flight matchup, Cap dropped back-to-back doubles matches, though not without a fight. Junior Hunter Walter (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and junior Ben Heiland (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) dropped their third flight doubles match 8-7 (7-4) after Sean Munson and Caleb Astwood outdueled them in the tiebreaker.

Wittenberg ran away with the match in singles play, taking each of the six matches. Twice, Capital gave it a good go but was narrowly edged out by its competition. Martin took his number two singles bout to extras but ultimately fell to Minard, 13-11. Sophomore John Roberts came close but also fell by a slim margin, 7-6, 7-6 to Astwood.

The loss takes the Crusaders' overall record this season to 1-3, but they will get the opportunity to level that tomorrow afternoon when the team plays in a doubleheader at The College of Wooster. After a quick turnaround, the Fighting Scots will kick off the day with the Crusaders at 8:30 a.m. Following that match, Tiffin University will meet up with Capital at approximately 11:30 a.m.
