Men's Tennis has Opener Spoiled by Asbury

LEXINGTON, Ky. – On Saturday afternoon, the Capital University men's tennis team opened its 2016-17 campaign with a nonconference match against Asbury University (Ky.). The Purple and White fell to the Eagles, 8-1.

The match was moved indoors due to weather, and the order of play flipped to push singles play to the front of the line. Inside the Lexington Tennis Club, Asbury (1-0) swept through singles play and took two of three doubles matches to claim the victory.

The one-two combination of Dale Booher (Hartville, Ohio) and C.J. Martin (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) provided the Eagles their better challenge in singles play, and brought home Capital's lone victory in doubles. Booher and Martin both lost 6-3, 6-2 to their respective opponents. When they combined forces to form Cap's top doubles duo, they engaged in a back-and-forth battle that they came out on top of, 9-8.

Santino DiMichaelangelo dropped his singles bout to Julian Telez (6-3, 6-1) while John Roberts lost to Ty Abraham (6-4, 6-0) in the third and fourth flights, respectively. Five and six singles players, Ben Heiland and Hunter Walter, also lost their respective matches in both singles and doubles play.

Capital (0-1) will play at home in their next match on Wednesday, Sept. 28. They welcome Walsh University to the CU Tennis Courts with the match set to begin at 4 p.m.
