Offensive Explosion Propels Capital in Sweep of Quakers

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team was in action Sunday afternoon against Wilmington College. The Crusaders won game one by the score of 20-0 and won game two with the score of 19-3. Capital put up a total of 39 runs on the day while accumulating 41 hits.

Game 1 – Capital 20, Wilmington 0

Junior Shane Wellman (Moundsville, W. Va.) picked up his fourth win on the season and improved to 4-0. He pitched seven solid innings in the victory.  Wellman finished the day with eight strike outs while scattering four hits.

The Crusader offense featured seven doubles, one triple and one homerun in game one. Junior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio) went 2-for-4 with a homerun and three RBIs. Junior Tyler Cetnarowski (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with a triple. Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio/ Licking Heights), Justin Ennis (Vista, Calif), Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif.), Doug Connor (Pataskala, Ohio/ Watkins Memorial), Kirby Boehm (Worthington, Ohio/ Thomas Worthington), Joe Caporale (Mayfield, Ohio), and Connor Hopkins (Highland Heights, Ohio) all recorded doubles.

The Crusaders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Capital added one run in the second. The Crusaders exploded for eight runs in the third inning. Capital added one run in the fourth inning and one in the sixth inning. The Crusaders added three runs in the seventh inning. Capital added two runs in the eighth inning and two runs in the ninth innings.

The Crusaders finished game one with 20 runs on 21 hits. Capital finished the day with four stolen bases. Foley recorded two stolen bases, while Bastin and Cetnarowski added one stolen base each.

The defense in game one was solid. Boehm was solid behind the plate throwing out one baserunner trying to steal.

Game 2 – Capital 19, Wilmington 3

Junior Brendon Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio) improved to 2-3 on the season. Borkey pitched six innings in the victory.

The Capital offense showed up again in game two. Hopkins went 1-for-1 with a homerun. Junior Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio/ Lakota East) went 3-for-5 with a triple and four RBIs. Smith, Bastin and sophomore Zackary Ary (London, Ohio) recorded a double each

The Crusaders recorded one run in the first inning, two runs in the second inning, two runs in the fourth inning, three runs in the sixth inning, three runs in the seventh inning, four runs in the eighth inning and four runs in the ninth inning.

Boehm was solid behind the plate in game two and threw out a baserunner that attempted to steal.

Capital finished the second game with 19 runs on 20 hits. Nine different players recorded a hit.

The Crusaders improve to 14-6 overall and 3-1 in OAC play. Capital returns to action Wednesday, April 6 as they host Kenyon College at Clowson Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
