Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's lacrosse team's four-game winning streak came to end on Saturday afternoon after its 7-6 loss to the Purple Raiders of the University of Mount Union. Kara Hines surpassed the 50-goal plateau for the season with a match-leading four scores.
Both teams engaged in a defensively-driven first half, Capital took a slight 3-2 edge into the locker room thanks to a goal in the waning seconds of the period by sophomore Kara Hines (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne). Freshman Katie Enot (Uniontown, Ohio) caused a turnover and grabbed a ground ball, setting up the final play of the half. She fed Hines from behind the Mount Union cage where the reigning Offensive Player of the Year finished off the play by finding the back of the net. It was the second of her four goals of the day and gave Capital a one-goal advantage heading into the half.
Capital held a vast shot attempt lead over Mount Union in the first half, 13-5 but found many of their shot fly wide of the goal. The Purple Raiders also had a foul-plagued first half with 18 to Capital's four, however, Capital was able to convert only one of its six free position shots during that time.
Mount Union (12-3, 6-0) regained the lead after scoring three straight goal to start the second and swing the momentum in its favor. Emily Bergert tied the game and then Taylor Pensyl scored the go-ahead goal with 17:33 to go. Both goals were unassisted. Kolbie Haines then scored again for the Purple Raiders 27 seconds later to up its lead to two goals.
Hines stepped up her game and scored each of the next two Capital goals, but each was answered by the Purple Raiders.
With Mount Union up 6-5, the eventual game-winning goal was scored when Katie Elder was awarded a free position shot following the delivery of a yellow card to Capital goalkeeper Maddie Wilson. Wilson was attempting a pass, and inadvertently hit a close Mount Union player prompting a card for a dangerous follow through. Wilson was forced to serve her card, and freshman Lisa Lotz came in to man the Capital goal. Elder lined up and beat Lotz low and to her left, scoring the game-winner with 7:11 to go.
Capital added one more goal by senior Kim Hoerauf when she streaked through the Mount Union defense and bounced her shot over Nikki Bonaduce's shoulder, but the Crusaders were unable to draw up another threatening attack to tie up the game before time expired.
Hines' first goal of the game served as her 50th of the year.
Both teams entered Saturday's game ranked in the Mid-South Region. Mount Union entered No. 2 in the region, while Capital was sixth. This marked the first time in Capital program history that it had achieved a regional ranking.
Despite the loss, Capital (9-4, 4-1) is still in second place in the most updated OAC standings. They are now one game back from Mount Union and one game ahead of John Carroll University. The Crusaders will host rival Otterbein University in its next action on Wednesday, April 27. Otterbein is in a three-way tie for third place with a 3-2 conference record.
