Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team made a push in the late inning to tie the ball game heading into the ninth inning. However, host Denison University rallied and recorded a walk-off win, 4-3, on Thursday night.
Capital (18-12) posted runs in the seventh and eighth innings to turn a 3-1 deficit into a tie game heading into the ninth. Both runs were unearned and were aided by failed pickoffs that moved runners along. Freshman Doug Connor (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) drove home Logan Bastin on a sacrifice fly in the seventh while Jake Foley scored from third on an errant throw in the following inning.
Entering his fourth inning of relief, junior Brett Colburn surrendered a leadoff double to Tanner Johnson, who was immediately advanced by a sacrifice. Capital attempted to get the lead runner, but was unsuccessful, leading to an intention walk to load the bases. Bastin cut down a runner at the plate, but the following batter, Ethan Carlyon, drove a single down the left field line to end the game with a walk-off base hit.
Freshman Gabe Morris (Pataskala, Ohio/Newark Catholic) earned the start for Capital and tossed five innings of solid work in a no-decision. Colburn took the loss, making him 1-1 on the year.
Capital's offense was limited to six hits on the day. Foley and Kirby Boehm each recorded two hits apiece.
The Crusaders will head to Baldwin Wallace this Saturday, April 23, to play the Yellow Jackets in a twinbill set to begin at 1 p.m.
