Baseball Splits with Mount Union, Thanks to Walk-Off Hit by Alexander Smith

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team was in action Saturday afternoon against the University of Mount Union. The Crusaders fell in game one 19-6, but bounced back to win a thrilling extra inning game 8-7, thanks to a walk-off hit by Alexander Smith.

Game 1 – Mount Union 19, Capital 6

The Purple Raiders jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

In the bottom of the first inning, junior Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio/ Licking Heights) led the inning off with a double down the left field line. Foley later scored on a ground out by sophomore Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif.).

Mount Union added two more runs in the top of the third retaking the lead, 3-1.

The Crusaders got one back in the bottom of the third. Smith singled up the middle and then advanced on a wild pitch. Junior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio) recorded an RBI double down the left field line to score Smith.

Mount Union added one in the top of the fourth, four in the top of the fifth and seven in the top of the sixth to take a 15-2 lead.

Capital added three in the bottom half of the sixth to cut the lead to 15-5. The Crusaders added another run in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 15-6.

The Purple Raiders added two runs in the eighth and two runs in the ninth.

Bastin finished game one 5-5 with a homerun, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

Game 2 – Capital 8, Mount Union 7

In the bottom of the first, Foley reached on a throwing error. Foley then stole second base. Smith singled up the middle, which scored Foley.  Bastin recorded an RBI double to right center and Smith scored.

Mount Union scored three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Crusaders tied the game on a Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio/ Lakota East) RBI single that scored Sean Pettibone (Ashville, Ohio). Smith then recorded a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Joe Caporale (Mayfield, Ohio). Capital regained the lead 4-

The Purple Raiders tied the game in the top of the eighth and regained the lead in the top of the 10th, 5-4.

In the bottom of the 10th, Tyler Cetnarowski (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) singled through the left side, which scored Connor Hopkins (Highland Heights, Ohio).

After Mount Union scored two in the top of the 11th, Smith reached on an error by the third baseman that scored Foley, cutting the Purple Raiders' lead to 7-6. Two batters later, Hopkins singled to right field, which scored Colburn to tie it up.

It all came down to the bottom of the 12th inning. Smith came up with one out and runners on first and third. Smith singled down the right field line that scored Foley and gave the Crusaders the walk-off hit for the win.

Colburn pitched one scoreless inning in relief with two strikeouts. Colburn recorded his first win of the season.

Capital improves to 16-10 overall and 5-5 in the OAC. The Crusaders return to action Tuesday, April 19th as they travel to Marietta for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
