Capital Splits Doubleheader with Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team was in action Friday afternoon against Muskingum University. The Crusaders split with the Muskies. Capital lost game one 9-6, but bounced back and won game two 9-4. Justin Ennis had two homeruns on the day.

Game 1 – Muskingum 9, Capital 6

Junior Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio/ Licking Heights) led the game off with a double to center field and later scored on a fielder's choice.

The Muskies scored the next nine runs and took a 9-1 lead into the ninth inning.

The Crusaders didn't go down without a fight. Sophomore Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif.) reached on a Muskingum error to start the inning off. Junior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio) singled to center, which allowed Smith to advance to second. Junior Tyler Cetnarowski (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) drew a walk to load the bases. Junior Tyler Gibbons (Liberty Township, Ohio/ Lakota East) singled up the middle and Smith scored. Junior Justin Ennis (Vista, Calif.) came into the game to pinch hit. Ennis blasted a grand slam, the first of his career.

Game 2 – Capital 9, Muskingum 4

Capital jumped out early again in game two. Foley started the game off with a single through the right side. Junior Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio/ Lakota East) singled to left field and advanced Foley to third. Smith reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Foley to score.

Muskingum scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead.

Colburn started the third inning off with a double to left center. Bastin hit a two-run homerun to tie it up. After Ennis reached on an error, Cetnarowski tripled to left center scoring Ennis. Sophomore Daniel Walters (Concord, Ohio) singled to left field and Cetnarowski scored extending the Crusaders lead to 5-3.

Capital added another run in the top of the sixth, when Bastin scored on an error by the third baseman.

In the seventh inning, Ennis drove the ball deep to right field for a solo homerun extending the Crusaders' lead to 7-4.

Smith started the ninth inning off with a triple to right field. Ennis then recorded an RBI double to right center scoring Smith. Walters singled through the left side and Ennis scored.

Freshman Alex Mukensturm (Tecumseh, Mich.) recorded his second win of the season. Mukensturm recorded two strikeouts in five and two thirds innings of work. Sophomore Casey Hamrick (Westerville, Ohio/ Worthington Christian) added an inning and a third of scoreless work on the mound. Sophomore Joseph Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio) pitched two scoreless innings as well. Borkey recorded five strike outs and didn't surrender a hit.

With the split, the Crusaders are now 15-9 overall and 4-4 in the OAC. Capital returns to action Saturday as they play host to the University of Mount Union at Clowson Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
