Box Score ADA, Ohio – Capital University sophomore Kara Hines hit an offensive milestone while helping the women's lacrosse team improve to 2-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference play. Capital defeated Ohio Northern University, 16-1, on Wednesday evening at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
Kara Hines (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) hit for a game-high five goals in Capital's win. Her second goal of the first half put her at 100 career goals in just 24 career games. She currently possesses 103 goals and 109 points in her time wearing Purple and White.
All five goals in the first half were scored by sophomores with Taylor Thomas (Massillon, Ohio) adding two and Victoria Husain (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) posted one. The Crusaders locked down on defense, allowing just eight shots in the first half. Junior Maddie Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) made five stops and kept the Polar Bears to just one goal in the opening frame.
Capital then exploded for 11 goals and at the same time did not allow a single shot attempt in the second half. They outshot the hosts 22-0 for the half and 43-8 over the course of the game. The Crusaders also dominated off of the draw, 17-2, and went 11-for-12 in the second.
Six different Crusaders scored at least one goal in the second half, led by Hines' three. Korri Titus scored twice and posted two of her three assists in the second. Husain also finished with five points behind three goals and two helpers. Taylor Collett (Westerville, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) ended the scoring for Capital with 3:33 to go. That goal marked the 12th consecutive goal scored by Capital.
Wilson, the reigning OAC Defensive Player of the Week, finished with five saves of six attempts. She not possesses the top save percentage in the OAC (.507). Her counterpart, Shannen Larsen Van Alstine, made 15 saves but faced 31 shots.
With her five goals, Hines continues to lead the league with 41 goals. She now has four games with five or more goals, this season. In addition to her offensive output, Hines also tied a season- and career-high in draw controls, collecting 10 against ONU.
Alexis Juergensen (Canton, Ohio) led the defensive effort in the field, scooping up four ground balls and causing five turnovers, both team and game highs.
Capital is now 7-3 overall and for the first time in its three-year history begins the season 2-0 in conference play.
The Crusaders enter a critical stretch where three of their next four games are at home, and all in OAC play. They begin with a home contest against John Carroll University on Saturday, April 16, at 7 p.m.
