Box Score BEREA, Ohio – Capital Women's Lacrosse may have been delayed 24 hours to play the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets, but the wait turned out to be well worth it. The Crusaders used a mix of good defense and ball control to guide them to a win in its conference opener, 7-6, at George Finnie Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Capital (6-3, 1-0 OAC) dictated the pace with ability to control the ball off of the draw and move it up the field for the entirety of the match. The Crusaders won 12 of 15 draw controls on the day, paced by senior Kim Hoerauf who led both sides with five. Despite committing more turnovers than the Yellow Jackets, Capital went 5-for-6 on clear attempts to help set up its offense and keep the ball from Baldwin Wallace.
Just 2:25 into the contest, sophomore Kara Hines (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) stuck for the first of three times in the first half. Stemming from a BW foul, Hines converted the first of two free position shots. She and sophomore Victoria Hussain (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) connect nearly three minutes later to increase Capital's lead to 2-0 before six minutes had passed.
Baldwin Wallace's Emma Harding halved the lead before the 10-minute mark, but Hines and Hoerauf provided back-to-back goals to pad Capital's lead to two goals heading into the locker room.
With Hines' third goal of the match, she continues to creep up on 100 goals for her career. She currently stands at 98, and with six assists possesses 104 career points.
Junior Maddie Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) helped the defensive effort that kept the Yellow Jackets to two first-half goals and helped stave off an attempt to comeback in the second. She made five saves in each half and 10 of 16 on the day.
Junior Kori Titus (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) came up big in the second half with two goals early in the second half to create a 7-2 lead for Capital. She also assisted on a man-up goal scored by Taylor Thomas 10 minutes into the stanza. She finished with four points on a pair of goals and assists.
Baldwin Wallace (7-4, 0-1) did score four unanswered goals from the 10:35 mark on, but Capital caused three turnovers in the final 3:30. Wilson also came up with one last key save with 48 seconds left on the clock to keep the Crusaders' lead intact and grant them a 7-6 victory.
The win also marks the Crusaders' first over Baldwin Wallace in its history.
Capital will play its second straight conference road game at Ohio Northern University on Wednesday, April 16, at 6:30 p.m.
