Huge Eight-Run Seventh Inning Propels Capital to Comeback Victory

AUBRUNDALE, Fla. – The Capital University baseball team was in action Friday afternoon against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at the RussMatt Invitational. The Crusaders won, 11-9, in large part due to an eight-run seventh inning.

The Capital offense was led by juniors Justin Ennis (Vista, Calif.) and Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio). Bastin went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs. Ennis went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

After the Engineers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, the Crusaders responded with two runs. The first run came on a single by Ennis that scored Bastin and Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio/ Lakota East).

Rose-Hulman answered with four more runs in the top of the fourth and added another run in the top of the fifth.

Capital responded with a huge eight-run seventh inning led off by an Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif.) triple. The next batter, Colburn, singled to score Smith. After a Bastin single, Tyler Gibbons singled, scoring Colburn. After an Ennis walk, Tyler Cetnarowski was hit by a pitch which scored Bastin. Kirby Boehm (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) then singled which plated runs by Ennis and Gibbons. After another walk that loaded the bases, Zachary Ary (London, Ohio/Jonathan Alder) drew a walk that scored Cetnarowski. Bastin recorded his second single of the inning that allowed Ary and Joe Caporale (Mayfield, Ohio) to score. Capital claimed a 10-8 lead.

The Engineers scored one more run in the top of the eighth. Caporale singled and allowed Ennis to score.

Seven Capital players recorded hits, while eight different players scored a run. The offensive outburst of 11 runs on 15 hits is the third game in a row in which the Crusaders scored 10 or more runs.

Sophomore Casey Hamrick (Westerville, Ohio/Worthington Christian) picked up his first win of the season. He came in with two runners on in the top of the sixth and was able to get out of the inning without a run surrendered. Hamrick had a perfect seventh inning as well, to finish with an unblemished two innings of relief work. Sophomore Joseph Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio) picked up his first save on the year after two innings of relief.

Capital improved to 5-2 on the season. The Crusaders end the spring break trip in Florida with a matchup against Clark University (Mass.) on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
