Crusaders Pull Away from Tigers in 8-4 Road Win

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team's offense led it to victory number 12 on the season after taking down Wittenberg University, 8-4, Wednesday night. Logan Bastin and Brett Colburn both had three-hit days to lead the way.

Capital had jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the third inning after junior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio) hit a pair of run-scoring doubles to account for three runs. After his two-bagger in the third, he later scored thanks to a Wittenberg error.

The Tigers responded with a four-run third inning after back-to-back one-out, two-RBI base hits. After that point, the Capital pitching staff kept the home team off of the board for the rest of the game.

Four different Capital pitchers combined to toss the final five innings and surrendered just two hits over that time. Jacob Sheaf (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned the win after becoming the pitcher of record after Capital took the lead in the top of the fifth. Tyler Spears (Washington Court House, Ohio) earned the first save of his career after pitching a scoreless ninth.

The Crusaders took the lead back while batting with two outs in the top of the fifth. Zachary Ary (London, Ohio) kept the inning alive with an infield single and then stole second to put him in scoring position. Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio/Licking Heights) then stepped to the plate and knocked in Ary with a single to left, plating the go-ahead run.

Capital added three runs in their final two trips to the plate, one of which scored as a result of Bastin's third home run of the season and his second in as many games.

The top of the Capital lineup went a combined10-for-18 from spots one through four. That combo scored five times and drove in six of Capital's eight runs. Bastin went 3-for-4 with four RBIs while Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

Capital (12-6) will get back into conference play with a road trip to Wilmington College this Saturday. Game one is set to begin at 1 p.m.
