Box Score FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Capital University baseball team was in action Sunday afternoon as they took on Franklin College. The Crusaders fell, 7-5, despite 2-for-4 performances from Alexander Smith and Logan Bastin. Brett Colburn also extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
Capital got things started in the first inning. Junior Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio/ Licking Heights) led the inning off with a single and then advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Junior Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio/ Lakota East) then grounded out to second allowing Foley to score.
The Grizzlies answered with four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
The Crusaders added four runs in the top of the second to retake the lead. Sophomore Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif.) led the inning off with a single. The next batter, senior Kirby Boehm (Worthington, Ohio/ Thomas Worthington), singled. After Connor Hopkins (Highland Heights, Ohio) reached on an error to load the bases, freshman Mitchell Bodden (Lakota, Ohio/ Lakota East) singled which scored Smith and Boehm. Two batters later, junior Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio/ Lakota East) singled, allowing Bodden to score. Capital regained the lead 5-4.
Franklin scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Smith and Bastin finished the day going 2-for-4 at the plate. Colburn and Bodden led the way with two RBIs each.
The Crusaders recorded a four-run second inning and reached a total of 10 hits as a team, but fell short in the end.
Franklin's Christian Sullivan pitched a complete game in the winning effort.
The Crusaders fall to 8-5 on the season and look to bounce back when they take on Ohio University-Lancaster on Wednesday, March 23. Capital will travel to Ohio-Lancaster and first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
