Box Score CLERMONT, Fla. – The Capital University women's lacrosse team was in action Wednesday morning against Saint Vincent College (Pa.) at the National Training Center. The Crusaders won 20-7 guided by Kim Hoerauf and Taylor Thomas' game-high five goals, each.
Saint Vincent (0-2) marked up the scoreboard first, but Capital (3-0) would score the game's next nine goals in a row. Kara Hines (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) contributed with three, Kim Hoerauf (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) added three, Taylor Thomas (Canton, Ohio) chipped in with two and Victoria Husain (Westerville, Ohio/ Westerville South) scored one to account for those goals.
After a Bearcat goal, Hines added another tally at the 12-minute mark and was assisted by Mary Manos (Canton, Ohio).
Saint Vincent responded with a goal just 10 seconds later, cutting the lead down to 11-3. Thomas then scored on a pass from Korri Titus (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) with 11 minutes to play in the half.
After two more Bearcat goals, Capital took an 11-5 lead into the half.
After a foul on St. Vincent, Thomas capitalized on a free position shot just a little over a minute into the second half.. Just over a minute later Thomas scored again, this time on a pass from Husain. At the 23-minute mark, Husain again added a helper, this time finding Hoerauf on the goal. After a foul on the Bearcats, Husain scored on her accord off of a free position shot that extended the Capital lead to 15-5.
Taylor Collett (Westerville, Ohio/ Olentangy Orange) scored her first goal of the season in response to a Bearcats goal with 11:54 remaining.
Thomas finished the game with a new career-high five goals. Hoerauf added five goals and two draw controls. Hines contributed with a game-high nine draw controls, chipped in with four goals, picked up four ground balls, and caused one turnover. Husain recorded a game-high six assists, added two goals and picked up one ground ball.
As a team, the Crusaders outshot the Bearcats 23-13. Capital also had the advantage in ground balls and draw controls. The defense was stout in the second half, allowing just three shots and none in the final 12:12 of the game. The Crusaders were successful on 14-of-16 clear attempts, and shot at nearly at nearly the same rate. The Purple and White connected on 20 of their 23 total shots over the course of the game, good for an 87 percent success rate.
Capital improved to 3-0 on the season. The Crusaders return home for the next game on Saturday, March 12, at 11 a.m. against Calvin College.
