ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Capital University women's lacrosse team fell on the road Saturday afternoon, dropping a 22-2 decision to University of Mount Union at Kehres Stadium.
Capital moves to 4-9 overall on the season, while Mount Union improves to 8-5.
Mount Union came out strong in the opening quarter, scoring four straight goals to build an early advantage. Heather Stoner got Capital on the board midway through the first, finishing a feed from Leah Leno, but the Purple Raiders responded with another late goal to take a 5-1 lead after one.
The second quarter saw Mount Union extend its lead significantly, outscoring Capital 8-0 in the frame. The Comets struggled to find offensive rhythm against an aggressive defensive unit, heading into halftime trailing 13-1.
The momentum remained with Mount Union in the second half, as the home team added five more goals in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 18-1.
Capital found the back of the net again in the fourth quarter, as Kadyn Hyer converted a free-position opportunity for the Comets' second goal of the contest. However, Mount Union continued its offensive surge, adding four more goals to close out the 22-2 final.
Heather Stoner and Kadyn Hyer each recorded a goal for Capital, while Leah Leno added an assist. Hyer also led the team in draw controls with five.
Defensively, Brooke Burchfield made two saves in goal while playing the full 60 minutes.
Mount Union held the advantage in shots (40-7) and ground balls (19-4), while also forcing 19 Capital turnovers.
