Box Score CLERMONT, Fla. – The Capital University women's lacrosse team was in action Tuesday morning against Johnson and Wales University (R.I.) at the National Training Center. The Crusaders won, 17-5, led by Kara Hines' six-goal performance.
Capital started the scoring with a goal from sophomore Kara Hines (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) after nearly eight minutes of scoreless play. Just 30 seconds later, senior Kim Hoerauf (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) scored on a free position shot, extending the Crusader lead to 2-0.
After the Wildcats halved Capital's lead, the Crusaders went on a 4-0 run to end the half. Taylor Thomas (Canton, Ohio) scored two of those goals while Hoerauf and Hines accounted for the remainder.
It didn't take long for the scoring to start in the second half. Thomas scored just 30 seconds into the half. Hines scored a minute later giving Capital two goals in under two minutes of play, and an 8-1 lead.
After a foul, the Crusaders went a man-down and Johnson and Wales capitalized with a free position shot that resulted in a goal, but junior Korri Titus (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) connected with Victoria Husain (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) to respond just 13 seconds after the Wildcats' goal.
After another Johnson and Wales goal, the Crusaders went on a 5-0 run with goals from Hines (2), Titus and Husain (2). Four of the five goals came from free position shots, while the final goal by Husain came on a man advantage.
Capital scored three of the game's final five goals. Hines, Titus and Hoerauf accounted for the Crusaders goals while Lydia Knapp notched both of the Wildcats' goals.
Hines led all scoring with six goals. She added six draw controls, caused four turnovers and secured four ground balls. Hoerauf, Titus and Thomas all finished with three goals apiece.
As a team, Capital won 15-of-24 draw controls. The Crusader defense was stout with a forced 22 turnovers, secured 19 ground balls and limited the Wildcats to just 16 shots for the game. The Capital offense was successful on 10-of-14 clear attempts and converted 5-of-8 free position shots.
Junior Maddie Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) picked up her second win on the season. She did so behind eight saves on 12 shots against. Freshman Lisa Lotz also saw time in the closing minutes for the second straight game.
Capital improves to 2-0 on the season and will return to action Wednesday March 2, as they take on Saint Vincent College (Pa.) in Clermont, Fla.
