Four-Run Eighth Inning Not Enough for Crusaders

Box Score

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Capital University baseball team was in action Sunday afternoon as they took on Saint Mary's University (Minn.). Despite a four-run eighth inning, the Crusaders fell to the Cardinals, 11-7.

Junior Justin Ennis (Vista, Calif.) led the way for the Crusaders, going 3-for-4 at the plate while drawing a walk, scoring a run and driving in a run. Junior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio) added to the offense scoring two runs while going 2-for-5 at the plate. He also drove in one RBI.

Saint Mary's started the game out with a bang scoring three runs on two hits. After two walks that loaded the bases, Tyler Lursen had a bases-clearing double that gave the Cardinals an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

The Crusaders scored their first run in the bottom of the second on a Brett Colburn single that scored Ennis, who reached on a walk. Capital would score again in the bottom of the third thanks to a Cardinal error, cutting the lead to 3-2.

The Crusaders surrendered eight runs in the top of the fifth inning. Capital responded with a run in the bottom half of the fifth. Bastin scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Gibbons.

The bottom of the eighth proved to be the Crusaders most productive inning of the day. Bastin singled, driving in Colburn. Joe Caporale scored on the play off an error committed by the left fielder. Tyler Cetnarowski recorded a pinch-hit RBI double that scored Bastin. Ennis drove in the final run on his RBI single that scored Cetnarowski.

On the mound for Capital, sophomore Dylan Love (Lake Worth, Fla.) recorded three scoreless innings in relief. The Florida native struck out two batters while surrendering only one hit in those three innings.

Behind the plate for the Crusaders, senior Kirby Boehm (Worthington, Ohio/ Thomas Worthington), was a perfect 2-for-2 throwing out runners attempting to steal.

On an offensive led day, Capital finished with seven runs on 12 hits and committed zero errors.

The Crusaders fall to 2-1 on the season, but look to bounce back Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. as they take on Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Winter Haven, Fla.
