Baseball Opens Season with Doubleheader Sweep of Lyndon State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WINTERHAVEN, Fla.Shane Wellman helped Crusader Baseball start the 2016 campaign off on the right foot with a 13-strikeout performance on its opening day. The Capital University baseball team swept Lyndon State University in a doubleheader on Saturday by scored of 1-0 and 12-2 to begin its season 2-0.

GAME 1 – Lyndon St. 0, Capital 1 (F/7)

Junior Shane Wellman (Moundsville, W.Va.) set a new career high with 13 strikeouts against Lyndon State on Saturday. The Crusaders needed his career performance in its low-scoring affair in which a sacrifice fly dictated the outcome of the game.

Wellman (1-0) got into his groove in the fourth inning, sitting down six straight between the fourth and sixth innings. He retired 12 straight batters and closed out the game by picking off Jake Jourdain after he singled to break that streak.

Capital's lone run, which proved to be the game-winner, came in the bottom of the sixth inning when sophomore Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif.) led the frame off with a triple. Junior Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio) gave Capital the edge with a fly ball to center than was deep enough to score the speedster from third base.

GAME 2 – Capital 12, Lyndon St. 2 (F/7)

Game two was quite different after a total of 14 runs were accumulated, but on just a total of 11 hits and four errors. Capital burst out to a 5-0 lead after a four-run third inning. Junior Justin Ennis (Vista, Calif.) posted a two-run triple to help build that lead.

Both teams notched a pair of runs in the fourth inning, leading to a 7-2 Capital advantage, but the Crusaders went wild in the seventh with five runs to put the game out of reach for good. Bastin pounded his first home run of the season, a three-run shot.

Freshman Alex Mukensturm (Tewmseh, Mich.) earned his first collegiate win after going five inning and allowing just two hits. Both runs he allowed were unearned, and he recorded six strikeouts in his first appearance wearing Purple and White.

Sophomores Casey Hamrick and Jared Bass mopped up the final two frames without surrendering a run over two innings of work.

Bastin and Smith both ended the day with three hits apiece. Three additional Crusaders had multi-hit days against Lyndon State. Bastin also led the team with six  RBIs, five of which came in game two.

The Capital pitching staff combined for 21 strikeouts over 14 innings and just six hits allowed.

Capital (2-0) will be back in action on Sunday against Saint Mary's (Minn.) at 10:30 a.m. for a nine-inning contest in Winterhaven, Fla., at Chain of Lakes Field 4.
