Men's Tennis Gets First Win at Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Capital University men's tennis team overcame an early 2-1 deficit with strong singles play, leading them to their first win of the season. Capital defeated Franciscan University, 6-3, on Thursday evening.

Capital (1-1) took four of six singles match to help propel the Purple and White to its first victory of the season. Down 2-1, Santino DiMichaelangelo (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) and John Roberts (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) won their respective singles matches in two sets. DiMichaelangelo defeated Richard Watson 6-2, 6-4 in the third flight of singles play, and was followed by Roberts' win over Jack Galla (6-1, 7-5) in the fourth. At the number five spot Nam Vo (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam/IMG Academy) locked in a win in his first collegiate action, defeating Walter Matt, 6-2, 6-4.

To add to its point total, Dale Booher (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) fought back after dropping the first set to John Gallagher and used a 10-8 victory in the third-set tiebreaker to claim Capital's final point of the match. He took the second set, 6-3, before outlasting Gallagher in the third for his first singles win of the season.

C.J. Martin nearly replicated Booher's result, but was on the wrong end of a 10-8 third-set tiebreaker. David Freytag took the first set, 6-1, before letting Martin back in with a 7-5 second set win.

Booher and Martin paired up for a win at No. 1 doubles, 8-3, over Fraytag and Richard Watson. Franciscan took the second and third flights of doubles play, each by 8-3 scores.

Capital will be back in action on Monday, Oct. 10 when they host their first home match of the season. First service against Walsh University is set for 3 p.m. at the CU Tennis Courts.
