Crusaders Take Down Lords in Nonconference Matchup

Box Score

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team took down regional opponent Kenyon College, 10-4, on Wednesday afternoon at McCloskey Field. Shane Wellman battled and pitched an effective outing while the offense backed him with 13 hits to account for its production.

After posting a run in the opening frame, Capital (13-20) put up three runs in the second inning. The bottom of the lineup answered the call with Tyler Gibbons (Liberty Township, Ohio) leading off the inning with a double. He was followed by back-to-back base knocks from Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio) and Kirby Boehm (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington). Joe Swisher's bunt added another run and then Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif.) plated their third run by hitting the right-center field gap with an RBI double.

Capital's four-run sixth inning doubled up Capital's run total and build an 8-1 lead. The Crusaders belted three doubles and five total base hits to account for their run production. Tyler Cetnarowski (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) led the inning off with a two-bagger and then doubles by Colburn and Justin Ennis added two runs. Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio/Licking Heights) tossed in a run-scoring single down the left-field line to keep the runs coming.

With Capital's 10 runs over seven innings, sophomore Shane Wellman (Moundsville, W.Va.) had more than enough run support to bring home the win. Wellman (W, 2-3) tossed eight innings and struck out five Lords hitters. Though the Lords (21-16) sprinkled in 12 hits over his time, the Crusaders helped strand 11 Kenyon runners.

Casey Hamrick pitched the final inning and struck out one hitter in a non-save situation.

Though Capital put together 13 hits, they distributed the wealth up and down the lineup. Only Colburn and Smith finished the day with multiple hits. Eleven different hitters acquired one hit. Colburn scored three times while Swisher recorded two RBIs.

Capital will play another nonconference opponent with a doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan University on Thursday, April 30. The Crusaders and Battlin' Bishops will play two seven inning games beginning at 3 p.m. in Delaware, Ohio.
