Baseball Falls to No. 24 John Carroll

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Capital University's baseball team dropped both ends of Sunday's doubleheader. Capital fell to No. 24 John Carroll in a close, defensive struggle in game one. In game two, the Crusaders got off to a fast start with help from Logan Bastin (Masnfield, Ohio) but was blanked down the stretch, falling short of the upset.

GAME 1 -- L, 3-2

John Carroll's (21-9, 10-4 OAC) two runs in the fourth inning proved to be the difference in a low-scoring affair in the first game of the doubleheader.  Senior shortstop Mark Huddle highlighted the inning with a single to right-center field to score teammates Tyler Gentile and Mark Crowley from first and second.

The defenses were evenly matched as both teams finished with 27 putouts and 16 assists. First baseman Matthew Carnahan (Moundsville, W. Va.) led Capital (12-17, 4-10), collecting 11 putouts while also contributing a pair of assists.

Junior pitcher Tyler Spears (Washington Courthouse, Ohio) surrendered eight of John Carroll's nine hits along with all three runs. Spears received the loss to bring his record to 0-2.

GAME 2 -- L, 6-4

Bastin sparked Capital's fast start when he slugged his first career home run in the first inning to give the Crusaders their first lead of the day.

After allowing a run in the second, Capital answered the Blue Streaks with a three-run stretch to end the inning.

The stretch began with Tyler Gibbons (Liberty Township, Ohio) reaching first base with a shot to right field. Capital put another runner on base when a John Carroll pitch hit junior catcher Kirby Boehm (Worthington, Ohio). Following a sacrifice bunt, Jake Foley (Pataskala, Ohio) doubled down the left line to score Gibbons and Boehm. Foley reached home to extend Capital's lead to 4-1, following a single to right-center from Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio).

The fast start could not be sustained as the Crusaders were held without a run for the rest of the contest. The Blue Streaks added runs in the fourth and fifth inning before adding a pair in the sixth. The final run was scored in the ninth.

The majority of Capital's hits were from Foley, Colburn, and Bastin after each notched three hits to pace the Crusaders.

Jacob Sheaf allowed four hits and three runs as his record dropped to 3-3.

John Carroll pitcher, Andrew Doring recorded eight strikeouts before Aaron Lapaglia entered in the bottom of the ninth to record his second save of the day.

Capital returns to the diamond on Wednesday, April 22 at Wittenberg University at 6 p.m.
