ALLIANCE, Ohio – After Capital University's doubles tandems set the tone for the early stages of Saturday's match with the University Mount Union, Kenny Duncan closed the deal with a win in the final singles flight to clinch a 5-4 decision over the Purple Raiders. Capital has now won five in a row and remains unbeaten in Ohio Athletic Conference play.
With the match tied at four points each, the deciding point came from senior Kenny Duncan (Poland, Ohio) in the out of the number-four spot. After taking the first set from Mount Union's Jeff Williams, 6-4, the match was tied when Williams came back to take the second set, 7-5. Battling to a 4-4 tie, Duncan then propelled forward to take the next two points which claimed the singles bout and the match for the Crusaders.
Capital's doubles pairings corralled three points out of the gate with victories in each flight. Duncan was also a part of a key No. 2 doubles match where he and freshman C.J. Martin (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) coupled to outlast Malcolm Leake and Jackson Scneider, 8-7.
Junior Luke Buchanan (Westerville, Ohio/Central) and sophomore Dale Booher (Hartville, Ohio) won their fifth straight doubles match as a team, downing Rob DeMarco and Williams, 8-5.
Buchanan also won his singles match against Leake by results of 6-1, 6-1. That also marked his fifth straight win out of the No. 1 spot in the Capital singles lineup.
Mount Union stormed back to take the second, third, fifth and sixth flights of singles play to lead to the decisive singles match featuring Duncan.
Capital's next three matches will be hosted at home, beginning with John Carroll University on Saturday, April 18. They will come back the very next day and host a doubleheader with Baldwin Wallace University and Marietta College.
