Crusaders Cruise Past Tigers, 16-5

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University Baseball battled through windy conditions while mastering a 16-5 victory over Wittenberg University at Clowson Field, Tuesday afternoon. The Crusaders took advantage of seven Tiger errors while the offense regained its stroke to guide them toward their ninth win of the season.

Capital (9-10 overall) put together two six-run innings to help guide them to victory. The Crusaders roughed up Wittenberg pitcher Mike Burgher (0-2) for 10 of those runs, knocking him out midway through the fourth inning.

In the second inning, Burgher loaded the bases and set the table for run-scoring base hits from junior Tyler Cetnarowski (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and sophomore Brett Colburn (Liberty Township, Ohio) at the bottom of the order. Up 3-1, Capital turned over the lineup and RBI base hits from freshman Alexander Smith (Elk Grove, Calif.) and sophomore Logan Bastin (Mansfield, Ohio) to build a 6-1 lead.

After Wittenberg (3-8) put up another run in the top of the fourth, Capital retaliated with its second six-run outburst. Smith collected his third hit of the game, an RBI triple to deep right. Senior Matthew Carnahan (Moundsville, W.V.) added another run by pushing a grounder to the right side, but reached base when it was booted by the second baseman. Sophomore Justin Ennis (Vista, Calif.) then added two more runs with a two-run single to make for an 11-2 score. Cetnarowski pushed home the last run with an RBI single to make for an even dozen runs.

Eight different pitchers toed the rubber for the Crusaders, combining to allow just five runs on eight Wittenberg hits. Freshman Conner Golden (Galena, Ohio) earned the win, his second, after being the pitcher of record when the Crusaders took its commanding lead in the second inning. Freshmen Patrick Avellano (New Albany, Ohio), Stephen Gittins (Chardon, Ohio) and Casey Hamrick (Westerville, Ohio) all pitched one scoreless inning, each. Joseph Borkey (Kirtland Hills, Ohio) closed up the eighth and ninth innings, also in scoreless fashion.

Smith led the Crusaders with three hits in four plate appearances, scoring twice and driving home two runs.

Also having multiple-hit games were Jake Foley (2-4), Cetnarowski (2-3, 2 RBI) and Colburn (2-4, 2 RBI).

Capital will return to action at Clowson Field this Friday, April 3, against Wilmington College. First pitch for Friday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
